Try to clean this up as best you can and then buy some UV dye and a light so you add the dye to the coolant and find the source of the leak.

Wild guess: Gasket(s) under the coolant crossover pipe.

Yes, there's a point where it's very obvious that you've reached the end. Just go slow with the turns and you'll know when you've reached the limit.

If I remember correctly it's because the threads of the valve itself stick up a little bit inside the pan.
Years ago on an LGT forum someone actually cut a notch in it so more drained out.
