First make sure your auto insurance is paid up, then move your car way down the driveway then heat up the area around the bolt with the torch.

Remove that splash panel if you haven't for more access. I'd use big vice grips first, then hammer on the 6 point with a long breaker bar. I personally haven't used those socket extractors yet but they look promising. I did try to use the drill bit extractors for smaller bolts but that didn't work.

i've used them on my older truck a couple times for rotted out fasteners. they've always worked. but those were fasteners that were properly torqued, not over-torqued...

Then remove splash panel and use vice grips

How did you manage to round off the bolt? Unless the 12 pt wasn't on properly?

Hammering on a steel bolt that's threaded into aluminum may turn out poorly

I can picture cracking the oil pan and causing a whole other, much more expensive problem. Get the bolt extractor and be nice to it.

The lower pan is steel.

it could be a harbor freight 12pt, which i'm convinced are 1/32 oversized.

i don't believe i've ever successfully removed any fasteners with my 12pt harbor freight set. i've rounded most of them off... which is half the sockets i own. the other half are 6pt harbor freights...

yes. buy extra's so i have something to tide me over till i can get them warrantied!

have you priced out sockets?!? i already sold the liver and a testicle for the tool box... the matco guy said he only accepts payments now in the form of first born's. i don't have any kids, therefore, i'm not getting any new sockets.
