Thanks for your help. As far as I could tell they both look the same (M/T)?

My dad (much more of a car guy than me) is saying the nipple is a non issue and to just replace the hoses and leave it capped.

Managed to get pics open on phone and yeah you are good for the engine. That nipple looks like it may be part of a turbo oil system? Anybody? I would not just leave it capped with that lightweight dust cap. I would want something that can take the heat and possible pressure.

It looks to me like someone did their own pcv system and returned it into the front cover through that nipple. Both pcv ports T into 1 line, which then is dumping back into the oil through the front cover. You could keep this, BUT... You should add an air-oil separator to keep the gunk from entering back into your oil. Or, return to stock configuration and just simply cap the nipple on the front cover. Cap it with a thick rubber cap and clamp it.
By doing this, they eliminated the blow by from the pcv from going into the intake.

We did take all the hoses off and were planning just clamping that cap on, or something a bit higher quality.

It might pay to pull the steel oil pan and clean the pickup and have a look at what's in there. Its not a very hard job, seal with ultra grey.
Could you post a picture of the oil plug on top of the motor in the front?
