Magnetic drain plug in both transmission and rear differential? - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

I recently bought my BRZ and began learning how to drive manual on it. Let’s just say I have stalled out about 50 times within a week... I want to perform preventative maintenance for the transmission and saw that you can install a magnetic drain plug to collect all the metal shavings I’ve been creating... I want to know if you can install the same size magnetic drain plug in the rear differential as well. Wondering if someone did it before.

I’m the type of guy that always wants to upgrade with aftermarket parts. So would just 1 magnetic drain plug be sufficient in catching most of the metal shavings?

The stock Subaru magnetic drain plug is sufficient. If you're worried, change your fluid and clean off the drain plug.

They catch 99.9997% of the iron stuff. The brass/bronze particles from the blocking rings float around but they don't hurt anything.

If you never do anything with your trans and diff fluid, it's ok. Even when serviced, only fluid level inspection is specified. People go apeshit over transmission fluid. Meh.

I am just paranoid of all the metal shavings I have created since this is my first learner car. I just don’t want the magnet to be filled with shavings and not take it out and clean it. I think for the peace of mind, I’m going to switch out the fluids and put in brand new everything.

Other than some gizmos and gadgets the cars are identical and share all the same mechanicals.

I can confirm, my 2013 was covered in metallic sludge the first couple fluid changes in the diff and trans.

Just to note, magnetic drain plug isn't going to help your clutch one bit.

Stalling has nothing to do with the inside of your transmission. Grinding gears does, but that isn't stalling.

Agreed. But since this is my first manual car, the stalling and grinding gears unfortunately is what I did the first couple of days learning to drive stick...
