You don't break out the time delay reflectometer to see where the break in the wire is?

Nah. I lick my hand and run it down the wire until it tingles. Much lower tech.

Don't try that guys it will not work

We tried to use a TDR on the Deep Impact spacecraft 1553 bus to find broken wires.
It probably would have worked even though the max length in the bus was only ~50 feet, but we had too many breaks in the shield grounds.

Yeah, makes it impossible to tweak it in. They may have improved over the years but the ones we had back in the 80s were pretty tricky. It's a bit of an art.

It's been 15 years since I used one, and then only rarely. It was more of a pain than it was worth when troubleshooting aircraft. There were so many bulkhead disconnects that you could just use a multimeter and shoot sections at a time for continuity.

Right?! Ok, so how many issues did you encounter that weren't caused by overzealous periodic maintenance?

I'll guess maybe 1%.

Ha, you'd have to know the airframe. I worked avionics on F-16s; mostly flight control, fire control, and radar threat warning systems. Most of the maintenance issues were caused by pilots overstressing the systems. Sometimes at 9 g's things just break.

Considerably more interesting than fixing an endless parade of worn intermittent coax connectors dripping with CPC. Blecch.

It was very interesting. There was some routine stuff, but a lot of it was troubleshooting issues. And as the planes got older it was no longer bad parts, it was bad wires between the parts. It was also very high stress, and I couldn't get out and work on someone's F16, so I cross-trained.
