A powered hub won’t resolve your problem. If the stock unit did not supply enough current to a downstream device, a powered hub would help, but that was not the case. Actually, the stock unit should provide 500mA current to the USB port in order to make a USB massage storage device works. I am pretty sure the problem is the lack of USB hub class support from the unit. The manual should state what type of USB class the unit can support. I will check it later.

Found it. P.57 from the manual:
USB portable audio player/ USB memory compatibility • USB version: 2.0, 1.1 and 1.0 • USB data transfer rate: full speed • USB Class: MSC (Mass Storage Class) device • Protocol: bulk • File system: FAT32 and FAT16 • Supply current: 500 mA NOTES -Partitioned USB memory is not compatible with this unit. -Depending on the kind of USB portable audio player/USB memory you use, this unit may not recognize the USB audio player/USB memory or audio files may not be played back properly. -This unit can play back files in the USB portable audio player/USB memory that is USB Mass Storage Class. However, copyright protected files that are stored in above-mentioned USB devices cannot be played back. (If the iPod is connected to this unit, file playback condition depends on the iPod specifications.) -You cannot connect a USB portable audio player/USB memory to this unit via a USB hub. -Not all multimedia portable devices are compatible. So, no USB hub support. Quick check on Bespoke manual (p.66). No USB hub support either. |

Actually I just have it on the RANDOM setting (Press and hold Rand (button 5) till you hear a beep) so it plays a random file from any of the folders (pg 18-19 in the audio system manual).

In theory, I could move the cable from the console to the glovebox, assuming its long enough but that really isn't want I want. Oh well, looks like I'll just "settle" for the way it works now, or stream from my phone. |

Does not look like the std BRZ Nav unit is going to be any better - from p244 in the manual:
• Mass memory support: Supports USB mass storage class. • Does not support USB hubs or multi card readers. |

For anyone using an iPod/iPhone through the USB port for music, I've been looking for a shortened cable since I plan to keep the device in that little cubby next to the port. Well, it seems I might have found one. Here's the link:
http://www.cablejive.com/istubz And it comes in black too, so it's less obvious then the Apple white! |

Nice find. Looks just long enough to be able to stuff the ipod in the little pocket in the dash.

How about using the outlet in the glovebox to supply power only to the console usb port for charging and redirect the usb from the back of the unit to the iPod?
Should only need a [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Griffin-Powerjolt-Dual-Universal-Micro/dp/B0042B9U8Q/ref=sr_1_1?rps=1&ie=UTF8&qid=1339521041&sr=8-1"]generic USB charger[/ame] for the outlet, a [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Cables-Go-28106-Cable-Meter/dp/B000R4L4CM/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&rps=1&ie=UTF8&qid=1339521 083&sr=1-1"]USB A m to m cable[/ame] and a [ame="http://www.amazon.com/USB-Adapter-Female-To/dp/B000BSHJK0/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1339521512&sr=8-11"]A Female/B Female Adapter[/ame] to get the console live. Should only need a [ame="http://www.amazon.com/SANOXY-USB-Female-Male-Adapter/dp/B000GHUIF4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1339521406&sr=8-2"]A Female to B Male Adapter[/ame] plus the cable from the iPod to get that going. That should solve both issues. |

I added one of these: http://www.angledcables.com/usb-20-e...le--4-inc.html and it is better, but still not perfect. I also think the re-route suggested by sure74 sounds like a good idea. |
