Does this sound like an exhaust leak?
[ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhvq8B8Pcno"]BRZ pulse jet cold start - YouTube[/ame]
I have a similar setup, and my sounds awful like that on a cold start. I know I have at least one exhaust leak. My question, does the exhaust in the you tube link sound remotely normal, or sound like it has an exhaust leak? Thanks, my google efforts/searches for exhaust leaks, hasn't put anything obvious in front of me for what they sound like. |

Are you running catless?
Exhaust leaks usually sound like a ticking noise when idle.

Take a video from the front of the car, we can't hear shit over the sound of exhaust leaving through the proper orifices in that video.
Sounds normal out back to me though

Catless cold starts are loud as hell unless if you tune them out.

Thanks, and sorry for not being more clear.
That isn't my car, mine just has almost the exact same setup and sounds the same. I have a jdl uel header (catless), jdl overpipe, and jdl ultra quiet front pipe (high flow cat and resonated), the rest is stock, and oft stage 2 tune What I was unsure of is how much exhaust leaks affects the exhaust sound. I figure it would change some depending on the severity of the leaks (different psi, etc in the muffler, may change the sound is my thinking). I know I have to fix my exhaust leaks. Just trying to figure out if that would fix/alter the exhaust sound I hate. If not, need to order whatever other parts I need fix that (would like to do both at the same time, I'm too old and fat to be laying under my brz. heck, my wrangler on the ground has more clearance underneath than my brz on 6 ton jack stands fully extended). Prob should just order a a q300 or a perrin catback and call it a day. Or go all in and embrace the obnoxious sound and order a berk muffler delete. Anyway, thanks, and thanks for not ragging on me too bad (I deserve it )

[ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZM5d_7c5Xo"]Borla UEL headers with stock exhaust - YouTube[/ame] That's basically how all cold starts sound like with a catless header, until you tune out the cold start logic. Exhaust leaks aren't necessarily loud. They're usually a hissing or a whistling noise. Also, have you been datalogging with your OFT? LTFT values can be pretty wonky if you do have an exhaust leak. |

I 100% know for a fact I had and may still have (heat cycles may have fixed it) at least one exhaust leak. I could feel it and it doesn't make a sound at the doughnut gasket. I also need to retorque my headers, will listen check for exhaust leaks then (funnel and some heater hose). I just wasn't clear if exhaust leaks would cause the exhaust sound to change, in addition to making hissing sounds, ticking noises. My leak around the doughnut gasket was sealing very close to when the cold start up was disappearing. I'll have to get it back up on stands Saturday to check if it's still leaking there.I was expecting a loud cold startup due to heating up the cat for emissions. I wasn't expecting it to sound like my car has salmonella and e coli food poisoning all at once. Was trying to see if the correlation of the known exhaust leak had any factor in the tone of my exhaust sounding like crap on cold startup. I just worded it all very poorly. So, I think my answer is small exhaust leaks don't change the exhaust sound. (obviously, massive holes in the exhaust would) I think I'll tell my wife a jackson super charger is the obvious way to go to change cold starts. |

Since it's been made clear small exhaust leaks, don't change exhaust tone... and if the wife doesn't go for the jackson supercharger "fix". I'll just adjust my cold start "Ignition Timing Post Start" settings.
Again, thanks. |
