Noisy Wheel Bearing
Hey Guys, I was getting a loud buzzing noise on left turns last weekend at Gingerman. At first I thought it was the tire rubbing in the inner fender plastic but inspecting more and seeing there is no rubbing I think it is a front right wheel bearing. There is no play on the bearing but the noise is quite strong.
Have you guys experienced this? My car has 20K miles but about 15k are hard track miles certainly close to the capabilities of the equipment. Thanks for your input. |

A quick test if it's a bearing is to swerve back and forth. When going straight or swerving right the sound should be much quieter (or gone) compared to swerving left.

Spread the brake pads apart just a little and then spin. If it makes any noise at all, it's toast. It should run dead silent.

Can confirm as I just replaced a wheel bearing a couple of days ago. Turning left was loud and vibrated, turning right less so. it was gone after bearing was replaced. You can also try to wiggle the wheel while the car is raised, you have to use some muscle, but if it moves at all, bad bearing possible.

I removed both front wheel hub bearings. The right one sounds like grinding marbles and it feels rough while turning with your hands. Interesting that it has no play at all so I guess I caught it very early. The left one was not noisy at all but the new hub bearings are much smoother while spinning them by hand. I replaced them both. No more weird noises while turning left or right. Just for the record, mine lasted 15,000 track miles (20,000 vehicle miles). I do turn very hard to the right and to the left too....
