Here is the comparison/research.

In mid-2014 Subaru/Toyota upgraded the coils to a "more resilient" design. The ad for the coil adapters says 2017+ but as you can see in the links/pictures, the 2017 coil is the same part number as the mid-2014 refresh.

Notice the (supersessions) in the 2013 picture. I believe these coils were also updated while maintaining the 2013 connector. I have no proof of this however Subaru/Toyota knew they were an issue according to a TSB in 2012. See this thread for more info :

The side by side comparison shows a definite change in design other than the connector as the overall dimensions and designs were altered.

Thank you for the comparison though, I wish you had an xray machine. It would be nice to know the internal changes. More insulation? More windings? Are they fortified with nutrients to produce a hotter spark?

The TSB and concerns had to do with component life span. Not performance. I highly doubt there is any performance gain at all. Just longevity.

If any of the 2015+ fail, I will cut both designs in half to compare.

My 2013 fired right up with the Off the Line conversion harness and 2015+ coil packs. Zero issues with install.

That is the way to do it. Crimping connectors is easy and this does not add another connection to fail like adapters.

Good to hear. I have been considering this option even though I haven't had too much of an issue. I do have like 5 spare coils so I wasn't in a rush to try it.
