I don't think manual will ever totally die out. Turntables, mechanical watches, fountain pens, and mainframe computers are still alive and well.

One day it will make a big comeback.

There needs to be a future for the internal combustion engine. If we go electric then shifting would be a possibility as a novelty that is artificially designed into a system that would be improved massively without it, but yea, it could be done.

I think what is more likely is that sport car enthusiasts will buy classics like they always have. We see inflatted prices on classic air cooled Porsches or demand for more cars like the Porsche 911R, but I can’t see this turning the market or lasting past electric adoption.

I've realized that sticking with the stick condenses all your vehicular options into a tiny box. Which is an even smaller box if you want to buy a new car. I have asked myself if a Type R would make a good family car.

When you condense it down though, it makes buying cars easier. Unfortunately there are some weird and cool vehicles that JUST come in auto, and new full size trucks etc. You can't even get a stripper regular cab shortbed Silverado with a stick anymore. Hell, in that vein they're almost doing away with regular cab trucks. The frontiers and tacomas don't even have a regular cab option anymore.
