Looks like a good idea. Pull them back out, 86 the gold (pun intended), paint them black and that's a keeper. Again really good idea.

Sounds like all the tests were inconclusive though. Anyway.. if you prefer the sound after removing, it's your car so more power to you!

Unless there is no flow through the noise generator, and it's somehow just operated solely on vacuum.
I'm pretty sure that when the car is running, it's always under vacuum. The intake area is fixed at the tip of the fresh air scoop:

Plugging the noise generator holes doesn't reduce the intake area. It just reduces the turbulence of the air under vacuum going to the throttle body and intake manifold.

I think the resonator can be removed and plugged as well, but you'd have to figure out a way to support the left side of the airbox so it doesn't sag.

No air passes through the noise generator. It's a dead end into a diaphragm "drum". The back of the drum then goes into a tube that connects into the main cabin.

I'll be stopping at Pep Boys this afternoon to see if I can find an 'cap' for removing the resonator to the left of the airbox. From what I can tell, the airbox is still properly supported with the left and right bolts without this 'loose resonator' (riveted and wobbly).

And regarding '86'ing' the gold color and painting it black, I am also planning on doing that later this afternoon as well (or finding caps for these locations as well).

First Issue we've had. Unlike many of the other people, I won't cover it up. We'll figure it out. Make the people happy and move forward.

I noticed that you installed 2 plugs into the factory inlet elbow, one in the hole that goes to the noise generator (towards the left) but what does the 2nd plug in the bottom of the elbow close off?

That closed off a tiny little resonator. Didn't show the pic, sorry.

So, here's the deal. I might as well add to the title of this thread '...and resonator delete', because I made it happen.

I spent about $10 more on parts to remove the large resonator to the left of the airbox. I actually spent more on different parts, but what I'm going to show you is $10.00 more (minus some black high temp paint on hand as well as a 2.25" band clamp).

After doing this mod, the intake sounded better (less whimpy sounding), the exhaust was a bit louder, and no kidding, I felt the low end (i.e. no matter what I did I ended up chirping the rear tires). By no means did I receive any 'growl' but overall the stock modified system sounds pretty darn good now!

It all started with lightly drilling out the top of two rivets and wala, the resonator came out.

See the pix below:

And a very clean engine...

Thanks for the pics of the resonator delete! Looks much cleaner under the hood! I'll def be deleting the noise generator and the resonator when I get my BRZ at the end of July!

After looking at it again, I doubt you even need the expansion plug for the resonator delete. I think it would be sealed fine with just the hitch ball hider and a hose clamp.
