Ordered a new filler tube which only cost me 60$ from one of the random online subaru parts websites. I should have time to remove everything this weekend coming up and I plan to post what I find.

That will be fantastic- I'm driving the car from Greensboro to Charleston, SC tomorrow / Tuesday - then to the dealer on Wednesday. I'm hoping to be able to tell them what the problem is.

A quick update from my end - hope to have a fuller update next week.

I had two fill ups when I drove to Charleston, SC this past Monday/Tuesday - I was able to keep the handle barely cracked and got full tanks without much issue.

I returned to the dealership and discussed the situation with the Service Manager.
  • I pointed out that they scarred up my rims pretty badly recently when they put new tires on them.
  • I had to return to the shop for the spark plugs during the 60k service because they didn't know they needed Toyota plugs.....$259 just for the plugs......$138 for the plugs + $104 (1 hour) of labor......
  • I explained that the tire rotation they recently did caused the car to drift right when getting off power, and drift left when getting on power - pretty sketchy on I-95 during a huge rain storm.(bizarre right? they tried cross rotating and said that did the same thing - ended up putting back to the way they were when they first installed - I guess I won't be rotating).
  • I have put in a claim with insurance to have the entire front bumper piece / radiator to be replaced due to a 2x4 coming through the grill - that will be through their body shop
  • And....after doing research on this forum, it appears that it is likely the collapse of the rubber liner of the fill hose - saving them/me hours of troubleshooting. He said their lead technician had done some research and came to the same conclusion. They would order the part and put it on when I have the car in for the body shop repair.
  • I stated that some on the forum seemed to indicate that their issue occurred prior to the 3/36 warranty expired....but mine occurred as my 5/60 is expiring (clicked over 60k this week). I felt there may have been a TSB about this issue (he looked in the system - stated there was one from Toyota - that is why he didn't immediately see it in the Subaru system). I asked if it could be covered under the 5/60 and the dealership would need to get the $ from Toyota / Subaru. He stated that he has a 'Compassionate Fund' that he can use to cover the work. I think it helped that I have been going there since I bought the car - had a good relationship with the folks that work there, and they have not provided perfect service recently (the wheels and the rotation), so there was some reason for some compassion.

Update #2

I picked up the car on Friday. The filler hose lining had collapsed, and they replaced it. Fuel flows into the car now as expected. Yay!

They replaced the front bumper and AC condenser, so the front end looks brand new.
