4th to 5th gear grind.

Recently, I've been noticing that when shifting from 4th to 5th, it makes a crunch like feeling. I've been noticing this happening at least twice a week. I feel like it's starting to happen with 2nd and 3rd too but it's not nearly as bad.

It doesn't happen after that though for another couple of days and I drive a lot. I'm still under warranty which is why I'm bringing this up, otherwise I would've just forgot about it till the tranny died then paid the 500 bucks and did it myself.

Anyone else experiencing this? I was thinking an oil change might make a difference but, I don't wana touch it so they don't say "oh you voided the warranty.

Any similar experiences?

Crunchy and grinding 5th is very common, something i am dealing with personally at the moment, its most likely bad synchros, i just recently got my car used so im not under warranty so im curious to see what some other people have done to remedy this, im sure there is a previous thread regarding this and if thats the case i hope someone could post a link to that here

Wow thanks for your post! I bought mine used too but from a Toyota dealership and it came with the remaining balance. I might take it to the dealer and see what's up but it's common? I need to research on that

Same with mine, and I'm still under warranty. I was suppose to take it to the dealership on friday but some things came up and couldn't make it. The problem with mine is that it doesn't happen all the time and the technician couldn't replicate the problem (The first time I took it)

Yes, very common problem in early production lf the car, like i said before it is most likely because of bad synchros. Best way to tell if that is the issue is to give the gas a little blip while your shifting into that 5th gear almost like rev matching a downshift, if the grind or crunch is somewhat alleviated you can almost be sure that the synchros are the culprit. Toyota in the beginning was ripping the gearboxes out of the 13 model and sending them out for evaluation when this was becoming a problem so take it into the dealer for sure

Hey... I've got a header on my car and a tune. Should I tune it back to stock and rip out the header before going in?

Got mine used too, had bad synchros in my transmission. Took it in and got it replaced under warranty. Took a while to get the unit in from Japan.

...I told them my transmission was grinding between gears. They took me with them on a test drive, confirmed what was going on. Then they ordered a new transmission.

Transmission work is standard drivetrain warranty thing.

Same with my 4th to 5th if I hurry. Usually I just ease it in (that's what she said)
and there is no graunch.

I've had that feeling in my old 2015 FRS and my brand new 2017 BRZ.

See this is what I'm wondering. I've heard of people complaining about our transmissions a lot. what's the point of getting a new one swapped in if they all feel like that.

Some say an oil change with motul 300 makes a difference.

Just learn to live with it. Even after I had the Motul fluid swap on my 15 FRS, it still had the 4-5 grind issue. These AISIN transmissions are intended to have very tight tolerances. There's a thread on it somewhere I'll link it once I find it.
