You are 100% correct on the rev limiter cutting fuel and preventing over rev in a acceleration situation. It just won't let you go that far. In a down shift your engine is fighting all that rotating mass and the energy is going to go someplace. Some will go to the wheels as they lock up and slide but even more will go to the engine since it becomes the weakest link at that point.

All the torque must hit the engine in that situation.

Not all just enough. It isn't just the high revs that are the issue it is the suddenness of the impact. An engine is designed to build RPMs more or less linearly. When they surge with a serious over rev they go well beyond the design specs.

I am not sure how this is even a debated subject. It is basic physics and engineering.

No kidding. Half these guys are going to blow the welds on their manifolds if they think they are protected from over rev.

They can't over rev if they don't granny shift and double clutch like they are supposed too.

So this guy was nuts and un-professional and he was just risking the health of the motor for a single lap time:

By the way, since young guys are reading here ... I am not saying that anyone should do this!! This was done by a very skilled racing driver , with years of experience and it was done in a closed track. In fact this guy is now the leading principal of Toyota's Racing team.
