Mike, I am curious though...were there any other cars you were considering?

Besides a 3rd S2000
Well, this car was ordered with a very specific plan in mind, so there were no other cars considered, except the McLaren 570s and the Koenigsegg Regera. Then I came to my senses and they were put back into the unobtanium bin.

That is irrelevant since it probably applies to all of us in one way or another.
You could have come to despise these cars by now.

The 570s is obtainable for mere mortals willing to make sacrifices. The Konigsegegegegegegeegegegege is, however, not.

Problem with a 570s is, it's not exactly daily drive material. This is, I think, why Porsches are so popular. You can actually daily most of them. They don't draw much attention. The twins are perfect daily material, even with a 500HP turbo under the hood.

I did some dynoing on both ACN 91 and VP 101 unleaded.

Even after multiple pulls, there was very little power difference between the two fuels. With the early pulls on 101, the ECU attempted to advance timing slightly, and ended up sending knock and sent the advance multiplier down, actually resulting in lower numbers on 101 for quite a while, before getting back up to 91 levels.

Also, on 91, 4 pulls were needed to stabilize the output; the ECU was dumping a ton of fuel up top initially. Each successive pull resulted in the ECU dumping fuel later, until it wasn't dumping fuel at all.

This is the same dyno all the CSG Ace header dynos are performed on; a 2013 dynoed about 165whp here.

I'm tempted to see how long the power carries with a higher redline...

Kind of hard to tell, it looks like it's making roughly 175hp at the wheels?

Yes.

That particular dyno on the picture was on (mostly) VP101, but race gas made pretty much no difference from ACN 91.

Yeah I spent 75 bucks on race gas just to satisfy my own curiosity...

Now, I have a bigger dilemma. None of the existing oil cooler kits I was seriously considering fit on the 17 BRZ, due to the enlarged airbox cover.

Going to test fit a Greddy this week, but if that doesn't fit either, then tracking this Saturday may be a no-go...

Are you sure you'll be fast enough to overheat the "TWO THOUSAND SEVENTEEN" BRZ.

Seriously though, this is interesting. Besides Flexfuel/header...an oil cooler is the first mod i would do. In fact it was the first mod on my last BRZ...while waiting on my <cough cough> ACE header to come in.

So Mike please keep us apprised, and do you have a good shot of the new air box...i was not aware of a big change there.

It doesnt look wider, does it just sit lower or extend lower into the engine bay?

It is a fair bit deeper even though the filter it self is smaller.

I would guess it's the shape of the rear section of the OEM airbox. Most aftermarket oil coolers use a sandwich plate that routes the oil lines past that rounded off portion of the airbox (back right on pre-2017 models). It looks like that portion of the airbox is now square on the 2017 models based on that picture.

Not sure what solutions the aftermarket will come up with, but a Perrin-style CAI (long tube into bumper cover) might be an option. The Mishimoto oil cooler might work as well given the way it angles its lines.
