I don't believe anything "comes out". What you are wanting to do is move that part of that ring, that is scrunched down in the notch of the axle, up out of the notch, so the nut can spin off.

When replacing the nut, don't forget to push that part back into the slot so as the nut will not unscrew......

hi again humfrz!

oh, we're talking about the same thing, just worded differently haha. I'm trying to unnotch the notch so I can spin the current axle nut off. But I'm having trouble, method wise, on how to unnotch it. Maybe I'm too gentle, I'm able to access the nut with my aftermarket wheels so I'm probably not tapping it hard enough.

OK, I suggest you re-read post#9 from @BigFatFlip .

" -using a flat head screw driver (small enough to fit in the slot on the axle) and a rubber mallet, un-bend the staked axle nut by hammering it into the slot. The slot should be ramped so the more you push the screw driver in, the more it "wedges" up to it to un bend it."

Now, with that description and your picture, if you can't figure it out, come on back.

You are basically trying to do this (see 0:20)
[ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7VCXSokDgPo"]How to make getting your CV axle nut off easier - YouTube[/ame]

Note that you don't have to get it completely "unnotched", just enough so you can start turning the nut with your breaker bar. It will straighten out some more as you spin it out. Don't worry about the screw driver in the disc, this is why you apply the e-brake.

UPDATE

Just got my new axle nuts and tried installing them on the rear wheels. Taking them off was pretty simple just like it was mentioned, but re-staking them was a pain, probably because I didn't have the proper tools. Here's a pic to show how much I re-staked it. Can somebody tell me if this is enough or if I should've staked it more? After putting the lugs back in, it still made the noise that I recorded so I didn't bother putting it on the driver side. Made an appointment with the dealer tomorrow, hopefully whatever is the problem is, it is covered by the powertrain warranty so I don't have to pay anything.

To me that doesn't look staked enough, I'd hit it with a punch a couple more times, basically you want the material to be in the slot to prevent any rotation.

I'd try the dealer anyway, I got both axles replaced under the power train warranty. The only reason I tried replacing the axle nuts myself was because the dealer wanted to charge me to diagnose the problem. Once they verified that it was axle failure, everything was covered.

Looks like enough to me.

I wish you well at the dealership tomorrow.

Thanks for the info, really helps relieves the tension of spending hundreds of dollars on the axles. I'll mention that I tried replacing the axle nuts myself, hopefully they'll go straight to the axles.

I wouldn't go that far... I would just strongly encourage them to look at the axles, specially the CV joints.

Knowing the dealers I've worked with, they would take anything to deny a warranty claim, which doesn't make any sense because they make money on these. I had one dealer refuse to look at my issue because I had coil overs and "looked lowered" when in fact I was slightly higher than stock height. I had to drag the shop foreman with a tape measure to compare the ride height to a floor model to make my point. /rant

Best of luck

Good point!

@ft_86 , it's OK to point to the rear axle, but, I wouldn't mention that you replaced the axle nuts. They may say that you didn't use "special tool" # xxxxxxx and claim you messed up the axle.

Let them go ahead and re-invent that wheel ..... nut ....if they wish.

CVs on these cars are notorious for going out, especially on lowered cars or cars that get beat on/drifted/tracked/autoXd.

Replaced both of my CVs at the dealer under warranty on my old FRS. Car was totally stock. First one was with only a couple AutoXs on the car. Second one was after some track days. Let the dealer check it out and they'll replace it.

I had the exact same clicking noise on both driver and passenger side. You have to replace the axle nut and torque the nut more than you think you need.

I had a local shop install the axle nut but the noise still happened. I then took it to my performance shop they took everything apart and found they just needed to torque the nuts slightly further than spec to remove the clicking. Literally been click free for about a year now with very spirited driving.

The clicking for me happened near a complete stop, when I was engaging the throttle, pretty common problem for subaru axles. Retorque and have a performance shop do it lol
