speed is also a big factor. I set the cruise to 90mph and it dropped my mpg to like high 20s. But if I drop to 70mph i can get mid-high 30s.

Interesting... I was driving for about 45 min and averaged a little over 36 mpg. I was ranging between 68-72 mph, temp was about 75 and using Shell V-Power 93 octane. I get better fuel milage with the Shell than Sunoco Ultra, but not to large a gap

Exactly. This is my fuel economy when I am having fun.

I tried doing this a few times.

Nearly fell asleep at the wheel due to boredom.

warm air is better for mpg, and cruise control is easy mpg, but with real hyper miling you can better the cruise control easily.

Ah, I Googe'ed it. I was confused from a Thermodynamic standpoint, but this it apparently:

Quote:
Why is winter fuel economy lower?

Cold weather affects your vehicle in more ways than you might expect:

Engine and transmission friction increases in cold temperatures due to cold engine oil and other drive-line fluids.
It takes longer for your engine to reach its most fuel-efficient temperature. This affects shorter trips more, since your car spends more of your trip at less-than-optimal temperatures.
Heated seats, window defrosters, and heater fans use additional power.
Warming up your vehicle before you start your trip lowers your fuel economy—idling gets 0 miles per gallon.
Colder air is denser, increasing aerodynamic drag on your vehicle, especially at highway speeds.
Tire pressure decreases in colder temperatures, increasing rolling resistance.
Winter grades of gasoline can have slightly less energy per gallon than summer blends.
Battery performance decreases in cold weather, making it harder for your alternator to keep your battery charged. This also affects the performance of the regenerative braking system on hybrids.
In severe winter weather, your mpg can drop even further.

Icy or snow-covered roads decrease your tires' grip on the road, wasting energy.
Safe driving speeds on slick roads can be much lower than normal, further reducing fuel economy, especially at speeds below 30 to 40 mph.
Using four-wheel drive uses more fuel.

Cruise control does not yield the greatest fuel mileage. Constant throttle position does.

I tried to explain this to a family member that has a doctorate. He refuses to believe me. Sometimes degrees are overrated. However, for most people cruise control will probably yield the best fuel mileage.

Dont argue w/ people that have doctorates. They are obviously better than you at life and can understand any concept.. Except when they call my office because they forgot their password to their email
