'I had a few questions about winter storage, I will be storing the car in my garage for winter and was wondering what steps I should take before storing.'
Turn the ignition key to the off position. If you really care about the car, remove the key, lock the doors, return in spring with the key. |

So what are peoples opinions on heater vs cold storage? I have the choice of renting out either of the two...but obviously cold storage is a lot cheaper.

There is no advantage over storing these cars in heated storage. Many of us use them and leave them out all winter with zero issues. The only benefit you would get from heated is you could comfortably work on the car (if that was even permitted and you had something you wanted to do to it).

Seeing as people park their cars outside in the snow all the time, I see no reason why cold storage isn't sufficient.

Just don't leave your battery in cold storage... remove and keep it on a battery tender.

I am a snow bird, I leave Wi. in the fall and go to Fl. for the winter.
When I leave I leave my cars in an unheated garage for six months each year. I leave a battery tender on each, not only to keep the battery charged but also to keep the computer memory in tacked. I make sure the antifreeze is good and I plug the chargers into a battery backup for computers. I learned this after a storm killed one of the chargers and the battery in the Lexus drained completely trying to keep the computer up. When I charged the battery and tried to run the car it "forgot" all kinds of things like how to put the windows up or down how to show the info on the screen and even how to shift gears. It was an expensive trip to the dealer. One year I had to park one of the cars outside but ran a extension cord for the charger. I have been doing this for several years with no problem(except as mentioned). [By keeping the charge up on the battery the acid will keep it from freezing.] I do the same with the cars in Fl. but there humidity is also a problem. |

Oh, I do put the new stable (blue) in the tank and filling it all the way up. The blue is meant for fuel with alcohol in it. And I put cars with soft performance tires on the curved roll around movers from Harbor freight, it seems to help with flat spoting.

I've been parking my cars over winter for the last 5 years and it will typically be:
- Fill gas up - Clean it nicely so nothing is sitting on the surface of the paint for months - Vacuum interior - again so nothing is sitting there causing weird smells - Hook a trickle charger up to the battery - Put a bowl of baking soda inside on the center console/seat to keep the interior smelling fresh - Either put it on jacks with e-brake down or put blocks of wood behind the tires if it's not on jacks and put e-brake down. - Cover it up. Voila. This is Canadian winter too - so it's typically in storage (for me) from October to April.

It's a bit anal but dead mice smell in the car is horrible. I also stick in a couple refrigerator packs of baking soda. They don't spill if you're absent minded. |
