Winter Storage Questions
 

Hey all, I'm new to the 86 world just bought a 2016 last week and waiting for it to arrive. I had a few questions about winter storage, I will be storing the car in my garage for winter and was wondering what steps I should take before storing. Also is it worth getting an undercoating if it won't be driven in the winter? Thanks for any help

Undercoat is mainly for sound reduction, so up to you. As for storing it I would change your oil and buy a battery maintainer and call it a day.

my old car i would store it in my garage, didnt really do anything special to it, started it twice a week, rolled it outside, rolled it back in... called it a day

Yup I'll have full access to it. Undercoating here is more than just for sound, from the amount of salt put on the roads after one winter rust will have already creeper in. Main reason I'm not going to winter drive it. Should I add a fuel stabilizer to the gas or anything or try to run it to empty?

Here's my opinion on undercoating - it's not as useful as it used to be due to more modern manufacturing techniques. The worst you'll see is surface rust. It would be even more pointless for you since you're storing it for the winter.
Like @go_a_way1 said, its main benefit would be soundproofing from road noise - but its so minor I doubt anyone would notice. Plus once you start adding mods like exhaust, intake etc that goes out the window.
Don't do rust-proofing either... who the heck wants that gunk on their car...

In terms or undercoating, I wouldn't do it unless you will drive in the snow. (Not sure what other will say)

The only other thing i would do is do an oil change before storing so that way the old oil isn't stuck there or whatever. I never did it on my subaru for 5 years and never did it last year but i will change my oil before storing this year.

Some say to disconnect the battery, you could do that also.

And some say to inflate your tires a bit more than usually so you don't get flat spots though even if you do they go away after 20km of driving.

Yep, I'd suggest you add fuel stabilizer.

Instead of just firing it up from time to time, I'd suggest you drive it for a few miles (5-10 miles) to get it good and warmed up.

I think undercoating may benefit you, more than your car......;)

You're not supposed to run it empty because air in the gas tank can oxidize the steel from the inside and leave you with a rusty gas tank. Also running it dry overheats and fries your fuel pump because there isn't any gasoline running through it to cool it off. What if it sucks up sediment the fuel filter doesn't catch? What's that going to do to your injectors?


Running dry is ok for a lawn mower. chainsaw, or snow thrower. I'd tank up and put in some stabilizer.

Would a thick layer of clear plasti-dip be a sufficient deterrent against salt? Isn't traditional undercoating a messy layer of oil/tar that's prone to drips and kinda fugly?

I got a 2015 last October, I sprayed some rustproofing even though I will not drive it in winter(no harm). I topped off the gas tank, no stabilizer(never had an issue with my motorcycles), got a battery tender, never started it for 4 months(Dec-Mar), that's it.

no biggy, get a brz car cover to save you time shoveling snow off your car. Don't worry about winter damage, ur car is made to handle winter

This car is awesome in the winter. All I'll be doing to mine is raising it an inch or two.
