@RFB my comment was a response to what you wrote.

Here's the question:

So would You recommend a 5w-30 sustina for southern california? What conditions would a 5w-30 be suitable for?

You may be perfectly fine with 0W-50, but you're just stating your own oil usage scenario and not even answering the actual question.

Since you replied directly to his answer, we'll just ask again: why would 0W-50 ALWAYS be recommended for Southern California? What conditions would 0W-50 be suitable for that is better than 0W-20 or 0W-30?

Why ?
- as previously stated -

and for your pedantic mind -
- Jeffery, our Eneous Corporate rep. advises that our motors run cooler with 0w50 than with 0w20.

And no we didn't bother to run temp comparison tests, someone else has.

Hello Mr. thread hijakcer.
Ok kids, stop with the base stocks.

For a while, M1 0W-40 was predominately Group III based. However, it has recently been reformulated to include a bit more PAO's. Do a search on ExxonMobil Visom.

I really hate oil marketers that make up their own oil viscosities. The SAE has no such grade as a 42.

Sort of .
Some new info on direct injection engines is that high calcium is actually bad. There is an SAE paper on this. Oddly enough, Subaru Japan still allows high SAPS Elf ACEA A3 rated 0W30 and the high SAPS Castrol 5W40 in the BRZ and WRX.

Fortuntately for the Twins, they use Toyota's DI so you're not seeing the fuel dilution issues like the '15 WRX and hopefully intake deposits won't be bad.

I actually live near Tom and we've talked about getting together for a beer or two, but I'm afraid my head will explode.

Back on topic, I'll see if I can dig up any relevant info on Sustina. Word is that ENEOS Canada is better at sharing details about data sheets but I don't recall if they share much on formulation.

Found it. Eneos facebook upon release of Sustina line in 2010. W Base is a unique base stock. PAO molecules are ring shaped. W Base base stock molecules are flat line, and very efficient due to fewer collisions. I think they are still fudging in the term "fully synthetic."
If you want esters, stick to Red Line and Motul, or go to Germany.

So sorry

BTW. If you read the HKS site from Japan that's what it said.

Notes:
  • 6 months, ~5000 miles
  • 5x track events
  • Engine not consuming excessive oil*
  • ENEOS Sustina 0W-20

*I have a minor seepage/leak coming from the front timing cover, on driver's side. The dealer has already inspected it and I will be having this repaired under warranty later this month. The oil change was done in anticipation of this upcoming warranty work, hence the low mileage change.

Overall oil still is okay, engine still runs strong, and I recently got almost 30MPG with my 245/45-17 RE-71R tires.

Thank you mav1178. I would want to see a real flash point number. There is no oxidative thickening in your run. I say Sustina 0W20 can safely go 7500k miles plus in the twins. Commuters, open up the bad boy sometimes to provide burn off.

I love the design of this oil--much, much more than TGMO/Idemitsu. The one issue is high calcium content instead of calcium/magnesium 50/50 for your other typical gdi engine.

I'm not entirely sure the engine will last 7.5 million miles...
