While I think the oil could likely handle it and doubt it was all that bad, I doubt it was particularly good for the engine either.

A shorter interval than that would have been overkill, but I still think I did the right thing at 4000.
I'm simply following what the manual says. That way, if anything happens, I won't (well, shouldn't) be at fault for following what the manufacturers wants.

And here's an interesting twist on that: Soon after I bought the car, I got a notice from my dealership that I was supposed to get the first oil change at 2700 miles, then at 7500 miles and every 7500 thereafter. That obviously contradicts the manual. Other people on the board here have reported similar notices from their dealers.

The service adviser told me that they send those notices because some people are not comfortable leaving the factory fill in there for the entire 7500 mile interval, but they're not sure if the factory fill must stay in there for the full duration. So they send the notices to let the customers know it's "okay" to change it sooner. The notice wasn't actually worded that way, however. It made it sound like the 2700 mile change was mandatory.

It seems unlikely there would ever be a time when warranty work would be denied because of more frequent maintenance than the schedule requires.

More in reference to just sticking with the intervals for simplicity, and since it's not necessary to do more frequent oil changes.

The new Porsche are changing the oil/filter intervals to once a year.

Except... some of the "measured" data on forums is dubious at best and disastrous at worst case. Just look how many (most?) of the polls on here are worded in such a way that skews the results. If you use that "data" you could have horrible results. We also need to consider how many of the self proclaimed experts we have seen on here and think how much you would trust their "data" and claims (almost anybody with Uber in their user name for example). There are maybe 10 people on here that I personally would take at their word and the rest I would independently verify every single "fact" that they present even if backed up with reams of data.
The problem with newer or inexperienced guys is they can not always see through the fog of bull shit that gets posted, may very well pick the wrong source for their facts and end up with issues.
Garbage in = garbage out

Edit: I'm curious about who you trust now

It was prolly a waste of $30 (dealer coupon for OEM oil, filter and gasket parts only), but I changed oil and filter after every track day since I didn't have an oil cooler and also for all of the perverse reasons @strat61caster mentioned. That equaled a change about every 1K miles. I won't get into flushing her other fluids and changing her pads...

Really glad you aren't servicing my car.

"just look at the oil"

Can you please tell me, Toni, how one judges the health of oil visually, with their eyes?

How about the health of an engine? Blackstone is repeatedly seeing that the FA20 under various oils and operational uses is receptive to 7.5k changes with no ill effects.. but then again, facts and evidence don't matter in this world anymore- only feelings

My old neon wanted 5w-20 so it was still too thick, but it works just fine for neon or civic owners... I am sure it'll work well for the vast majority of FR-S owners as well...

Looks like we should summarize the manual again.

One argument for doing oil change more often could be that we have Direct Injection engines and to help reduce build up on the intake valves changing the oil at 3000 mile intervals is said to help.
