Tuner related is the best way to put that. Pump install as other mentioned could be an issue, easily detected while tuning. possibly not topping off the oil once it came up to full operating temp as I believe that is a thermostatically controlled oil cooler kit so oil could have been low at high rpm and caused a drop in pressure. Or the tune has issues and it managed to break a rod, holly cow how would you not see that issue before it did that is what baffles me. At any case I would inspect your plugs, oil filter and remaining oil, fuel quality, and I would want a copy of all the tunes and all logs. unfortunately every tuner will point out an issue with someone else tunes as we have all found different things to work for us in one way or another, was speaking with a tuner recently about that exact thing. If the statement of proprietary crap comes up explain it is your property that you are paying for and are entitled to it. Good luck and hope you can get your situation resolved as painlessly as possible.

So I spoke with the Subaru dealership regarding pricing as Subaru corp said only dealers can give a price. These are rough estimates btw: Short block: $2200 Gasket: $220 Oil pump: $62 The ironic thing is, the dealer said if the car is heavily modified they can only sell parts but no labor. BUT they know a place that works on Subarus - Olympic Motorsports ![]() I spoke to an attorney today as well.. I feel like it's such a dilemma.. I know everyone is saying it's his responsibility & I agree but to threaten him legally to work on the car. Does that sound like they will do their best on the car? And then if he plays hardball to then sue, the time, $ & then find a place to get my car fixed back up.. What if they're vindictive & do something that doesnt show up for a few wks and they're like well u had the car its not us.. UGH! maybe I should buy the new engine he has $2400?? He said the car would be rdy by next week if we got the engine vs suing & car-less for..??? |

You're trying to convince yourself somehow this is not shops fault to avoid conflict? Willing to take it up the rump and at your expense??
Lots folks have given good advice here, and it seems you know what the right thing to do is, just gotta let your balls drop and hit it head on is all. Good luck

I would start with "you blew my engine. I appreciate the fact that you're going to cover the labor but I think you should cover the cost of the short block as well" ?

In those months you can learn to install the engine yourself with a buddy. Use the labor money they would owe you to buy ecutec for a base tune, buy engine, install turbo etc, and have the extra money for a good tuner and extra parts.

There comes a time in your life when you hit a wall and you finally come to the conclusion that you're not going to take shit from anyone, anymore. The principle should mean more than the time frame involved. You should do it simply to send the message that bullshitting / intimidating someone who does not possess their level of mechanical acumen is unacceptable.
Simple fact is that you were not present when the motor blew. It was in their custody. It had no previous issues upon their receipt. They must return it to you in previous condition. Also you can sue for your own expenses - don't talk yourself out of taking action or you may set in motion regret that leads to you enjoying the car less. |

My recommendation: Get a new engine (either they pay for it or you get it) and take the car to Andres to have it installed along with kit. Great standup guy, high character. Designed a turbo kit (look at my signature), has already worked on a bunch 86's. Then get it tuned by James, all problems solved. I call bullshit on the mechanical pump failing...... Tuner/improper in tak pump install 99% sure. EDIT: Just realized my signature does not have my build anymore.... here it is http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31625 Also join the Soflo owners page, that one is in my signature ![]() @Mujen84

There are some pretty ballsy tuners out there enough to pin their mistakes on customers...great way to get FA20Clubbed over the head.

I can't believe how many of these are getting blown up from catastrophic tuner failure as opposed to pushing the block too hard. Does anyone have hard proof of a blown motor from it really just being pushed too far?
