He can align it all he wants, but if there is excess resistance in the steering at any speed turning only one direction then his rack if fubard.

Yeah definitely an expensive mistake..

No need to be bullshitting on the streets. If you wanna learn how to drift, go to an event at mineral wells. They have them LITERALLY every month and cost like $20-$40. Loads of seat time and more than worth the entry fee.

Every now and then, they'll have a free event too.

Just saying...

Hopefully everything works out.

Sounds like you skipped some teeth on one side of your rack. The rack has little nylon teeth on the inside on driver and passenger sides. When you hit the curb on one side it can jump teeth. Unfortunately the racks are sealed at the factory and the only way to fix it is to buy an entirely new rack. Hope this helps.

You are correct. The dealership said that it skipped some teeth. They are replacing the rack. they quoted me $1,505.00. I should have the car back sometime this week...

Thanks,
Angelo

Hmmmm...if that's the price for just replacing the rack, I hope you have insurance at least. The rack itself costs $350-450 and the labor is really not that intensive. If that's all it is, I'd buy the rack and have it towed somewhere that isn't going to charge you a grand for a couple hours of labor. Just my .02c. On the other hand, if they're throwing in control arm, realignment, blah blah blah...MAYBE that'll start to get somewhere up there. But that still seems way high.

Yes, yes, he's a newb and this will be an expensive learning lesson.

Replaced the control arm and everything looked straight, other than the need for an alignment. During the test drive when turning the steering wheel driver, from straight you could feel some resistance. The steering wheel would also look like its having a seizure if you stopped while the tires were straight. He pulled everything off and looked for anything bent in with the steering but didn't see anything noticeable with the naked eye.

What would be bent? is it that bar going from the tie-rod to the power steering? Or is his whole rack-pinon toast?

Yes, he's an idiot. He's learning. Shit happens. Flame away.

Cheers, Angelo

^this. I was expecting "my friend got drunk, stole my keys, and wrecked my frs". Instead..he just wanted to point out that he does in fact have a friend.

Word of advice, learn to drift in a open parking lot with no curbs or light poles
