I'm sitting here at work calculating all the steps and cost I'll be taking for an FRS to reduce drivetrain weight.

My RSX, which will be my winter beater after I buy an FRS, has a 8lb flywheel and RPF1s and Continental Extremecontact DW tires. In otherwords, LIGHTWEIGHT drivetrain. 34lbs per corner. I also have a 5.1 FD in my trans and a quife LSD. Anyhow, I absolutely love the way the car drives with the reduced weight and shorter gears. I just hit the gas and the car takes off without any hesitation. It also slows down fairly quickly, which I like for taking turn after turn in mountain roads. It's an absolute blast to drive.

So for the FRS going with the new RPF1s in 17 x 7 +42 and same tires above, I will be at 34lbs per corner (stock 40.6). Then I'm going to get the Aluminum driveshaft for an added 12 lbs off the drivetrain. So this will reduce drivetrain weight by 37.6lbs BEFORE going with a lightweighth flywheel. I will in the future, but probably just do the mods above first so I don't need to drop the engine or trans.

And getting used to a lightweight flywheel isn't hard at all, and will feel "normal" after a few days. Gonna sell my RSX aftermarket parts and go stock to hopefully cover the cost.

When you refer to gearbox rattle, where/when are you hearing this?

I had a Porsche race car with a Tilton multi-disk clutch, and when I jacked the car up and put it in gear while running it sounded like it was throwing a rod out of the engine, the clutch rattled so bad.

I assume with the light flywheel, it's not spinning in a fluid, smooth motion, more like speeding up, and slowing down per each stroke, so the gearbox could clatter at idle, but do the gearboxes rattle or clatter at high rpm's?

I only hear the rattle at idle with the clutch in and the ac on. Which is to say, everytime a cute girl is handing me an ice coffee at the drive through.

Don't really care or notice any other time.

I did it by using at least a 24 inch breaker bar and starting as far right as possible. You will feel a squishy 90 degree rotation before it breaks loose. That's why I had to start as far right as possible. This was with a manual in 6 gear and parking brake on. With a automatic you will need some tool to lock the crank pulley in place.

I thought this youtube video (below) was a brilliant way to keep the crank from rotating until I read one of the posts who ruined their alternator using the method. You have been warned! This method will cause alternator damage.

We run, Lightweight Pulleys ( almost all of them ) , Lightweight flywheel, Carbon Drive Shaft, and have zero CEL's or issues. Plus lightweight wheels and lightweight brakes compared to stock.

There should be NO problems with any lightweight item in the rotating mass of the car if it has been balanced which 9.999999 times out of 10 they are.

Plus a Vortech supercharger...

Are you saying you are running a light weight flywheel that is NOT making any additional gear noise or chatter?

A multi-disk clutch setup will rattle way more than any single plate and flywheel combination.

I haven't installed my light flywheel on my 86 yet so I can't be 100% sure but every other car I've driven with a light flywheel hasn't made any extra noise above idle.

Really?! I think you are the first person I have talked to that says this. Everyone else describes the ACT being very noisy...

My ACT is quiet. It's the trans that makes a bit of noise as a result.

Either way, I wouldn't call the trans rattle "very noisy" and my exhaust is still stock. I DD my car and have no issues with the noises it makes. I'm not a kid, either, for whatever that's worth.

@FT-86 SpeedFactory might not notice any additional noise given all the other items in their cars that would induce various NVH characteristics.

I also have the ACT clutch and flywheel and mine sounds exactly the same. Stock ECU or do you have a tune? Also are you getting any check engine lights?
