I have the FF kit mentioned and I also ran into a rather large fuel leak when the seal between the car's metal hose and the replacement hose from the kit lost it's seal. I was lucky enough to catch it in time, and have it towed to be fixed.

I'm betting was on that vehicle, the kit came with the hoses provided were not a decent match from the metal hardline to the e85 sensor that's installed - it attempts to make a seal with a replacement hose with a larger inner diameter and thinner side wall - which made the clamp the only failure point (in these applications from what I've read the clamp is in place only to stop the hose from backing out over the bung - the raised lip of the metal is what's actually creating the seal)

At any rate, John has changed this in the kits he's now selling (at least for US Customers) so there's a screw on fitting that goes over the metal hose on the car - no more need for a seal between rubber and metal. As for me, I got the hose in the kit replaced so it looks closer to what the stock rubber hose looks like, just mated to a different connection for the e85 sensor - you can see pictures in the DIY thread. I hope no one else from the initial kit buy has to deal with this.

Thanks for the update. Moral fuel system changes need to be designed, installed/tested with great care.

^^ This X1000

Since day one I have been hesitant regarding the FF kit because an error in install can be so devastating.

And that's the reason why I've harassed Rich@ViscontiTuning in the Visconti FF thread for charging money for the upgraded fitting. The upgraded fitting should have been sent out asap and free of charge, especially when your customers physcial safety is on the line.

Would be interesting to hear back on what happened in this case - if it was due to a hose leak, then all hell would break loose.

I'm actually surprised he posted any of this info to begin with after going through insurance. I suspect they would have a problem if they determined the fire was caused by a botched aftermarket install that he performed.

This isn't worth much, but from what I was told on Friday the fire chief was still investigating the cause of the fire.

Its definitely fuel related though.

My friends, we will never know the real reason this happened. Think about it. It would help no one sell more parts $$$.

Agreed. I think the only update anyone would want to disclose publicly for liability reasons and continued parts sales would be "OEM failure with nothing to do with any aftermarket mods."

^^ Exactly and that might actually be the reason, who knows..... But I am pretty sure that if the problem was "fuel leak due to issues with FF kit" we would still be told the above story.

Yeah it's sad we're not going to hear a thing about the cause. Swept under the rug and more kits by just blaming user install for a poor design.

If it was an OEM equipment failure then I certainly hope that an NTSB report/investigation has been started. Then again I doubt the insured was exactly jumping at the bit to mention the aftermarket fuel system modifications to the insurance adjuster.
