You might need a pickle fork.

Hit the knuckle sideways so you're transmitting the force at a 90 degree angle from the ball joint. If you keep hitting it on the stud, you can mushroom the threads.

Good thought.

Another easy way to avoid mushrooming the threads is to put the nut on a little proud, and hit the nut.

You must be better at this than me, I buggered up both bolt and nut using this method. I was however using a BFH when I prolly should been using a dead blow.

Them is in their tight.
Fork worked for me too

With a pickle fork, it's easy to tear the boot. Something to consider if you ever want to reuse or resell. If you hit the knuckle at a 90, after a minute or so, the ball joint will slide off and leaves the toe link in perfect condition.

What sort of weight/length sledge would be most suitable?

Not very big, 3 lb (1.5 kg) should be okay. It seems futile at first since you don't see it doing anything, but keep at it. Eventually, it'll slide right out.

I haven't done it with that particular stud, but I've done it more then a few times. Experience would tell me which method to use. Unfortunately I can't really pass that over the internet so I just wanted to give OP as many tools as possible to do the job.

Next time I might try a modified version of HG's idea by using an air hammer instead of a BFH. Should make things easier on the arms and the surronding mounting points. If the snow ever melts and I finally get under my car, I'll report my findings.

Sorry it didn't work out for you.

Yes, been there done that too, that was before I decided to go pounding on the bolt!. So word to the next guy, if youre using a fork, careful. You can tell I dont do ball joint type work often, luckily for my cars.

I felt weird pouding on it with the bfh at the 90 degree angle after several blows, but youre saying stay with it, put in the ear plugs and whack-away, huh...will try that next time. Thanks for sure
