Clutch wear on BRZ
Looking to purchase a 2014 Limited BRZ soon. Test drove one with 8k miles and going to look at one tomorrow with 24k.
24k miles car is through a private party. Assuming the clutch doesn't slip, how long should I expect the clutch to last & how much would it cost to replace it? Both are 2014. Slightly concerned about 24k in only 14-15 months of ownership but could be good if they are freeway miles. Dealership has the 8k miles it for 25k OTD. Private party is 21,000 plus tax so 23k OTD. Private could negotiate down. Dealership has already took off 1k for me. |

Assuming both cars where not driven by kids learning stick, it should last to 80k even 100k depending on conditions. Price wise you may be under warranty from the dealer. Maybe even covered from the private party's original sale. Depending if he bought the extra warranty.
If your a DIY kind of guy you could do it yourself and just pay for parts. Depending you have the space/tools/times. Lots of YouTube vids out there. To me mileage means jack, overall feel, looks and condition of the engine/body are more important for me. If your worried about miles, save up get it brand new. 24k is nothing to worry about. (Unless it's been abused by some kid).

Although there are certainly rare instances that they may cover it I wouldn't consider warranty as a factor when discussing wear items. Agree 100% on not getting hooked on mileage. The number doesn't matter as much as how it was taken care of and driven.

So true. I seen 30 year olds drive with their foot on the clutch pedal, and only shifting after their bouncing off the rev limiter, while getting groceries.

Who drove the car? where has it been driving? Was it a commuter car? Did you ever take it out of state? Is it your first manual car? If you like it then go for it. But you can also pay 2k more for one that's a lot newer. I would probably call up the private party asap so you can see it before you loose the deal on the newer one.

It should last longer than that it if wasn't abused. I''ll be at 80k in a few weeks, my clutch is still fine.

My last 4 cars all had over 200K on them when traded and I never put a clutch in any of them. Replaced the engine in one (slipped timing belt) and pretty much carried spare pads and rotors in the trunk but never a clutch.

^ I can also vouch for not ever having to change the clutch in any of my cars.
94 300zx 189k miles- never replaced clutch, throwout bearing did seem like it wanted to go. Owner before me replaced clutch. Had master and slave cylinder replaced only for car. 03 Subaru WRX 116k miles - never replaced clutch. Blown head gasket came before bad clutch.

Dealership has been lowballed. Came from down 23,998 Sticker to 25k OTD.
Private party hasn't been offered a lowball yet. Have to see the car today to make the offer. Is there any warranty issues that are common in the first 36k miles? So I shouldn't be too worried about the clutch unless it is really slipping? |

My 88 I'm the third owner, original clutch is still at 250k, it's at the point where it's barely slipping on hard shifts. My bro on the other hand has a 91 turbo, but he was into drag racing. He got the car with 90k miles and at 140k his clutch went out. So it just depends how it was used.

In my experience, the clutch should last quite a long time. I've had a clutch last me 150k+ miles with a couple track days early on.
Replacement cost including labor depends on who and where you go. I'd buy my own parts and shop around for shops that will install the parts (some won't, but most will). Including parts that you buy yourself and the labor, you'll be looking at $800-$1500 total. |

they last 150k if you take good care of them. After I got my brz, I watched this video since the reason why I got my brz is because my bimmer clutch went out at 146k and instead of fixing it right away, i got the brz and I'm turning my bimmer to a project car.
By the way, I got a 2014 BRZ limited, 7,670 miles for 23,500. Keep in mind that there are other fees, $500 for dealer, around $1500 taxes, $150 plates and registration.. All depends on the state you live in |
