Oil temp/pressure questions, oil cooler, new member
I have lurked here for a while and have learned alot. I have read everything I could on oil temps and pressures but need some more specific info.
I have a 2014 scion frs, stock and was seeing 116 deg C (240 F) peak with 50 psi during canyon carving in high rpms before backing off. Recently, installed a cusco oem style oil cooler and now seeing 109 deg C (228F) with 43 psi. Air temps at 23 deg C (73 F). My first question, is 43 psi too low for extended periods at stock power level? I am now considering getting a Jackson racing oil cooler and removing the cusco cooler, hoping for more pressure/cooler oil. Oil pressure runs at 50 psi or more until the oil heats to 100 deg C (212F) and I would like to keep those numbers as min pressure/ max oil temp for 10 minutes of aggressive driving at least. I don't have any opportunity to track the car but have completed my first autox and never saw close to the temps I see running my car on the local highways (tight, twisty, lots of elevation changes). Will the Jackson Racing oil cooler keep my temps under better control and therefore my oil pressures up for my driving conditions? Fear of hot oil/low pressure is keeping me from enjoying the car like I want to. Plan on keeping this car long term. |

@7 skulls it seems odd that you're getting lower PSI at lower oil temp - are you sure both observations were at the same RPM level?

see the oil pressure temp video in the Basic Bolt on mods link below.
Very strange th oil pressure was lower at lower oil temps with a heat exchanger cooler as they shoul not loos oil prssure like an air\oil radiator type due oil lines ect. you probably need to run a heavier oil like 10w30 unless you in a very cold climate. |

Same RPM (7200) on both readings. I assume the lower temp has a lower psi because of the cooler restriction but I was surprised by the amount of pressure loss. I remember reading on here that a oil/air type cooler would only have a 3-4 psi pressure loss. The car isn't winter driven but I would like to keep using 0w-20 for start-up protection.

@7 skulls yeah you shouldn't see pressure loss with OEM / cusco since you're not increasing volume of oil vessel

Interesting, I only see the pressure drop at high rpms and temps, across the rest of temp. range from cold start to 100 deg C, oil pressure is the same as stock without the cooler.

How old is the oil in the car? It's possible that it's degrading and thinning out.

Oil has less than 4000km on it.

What oil are you using? I'm not sure you've actually got a problem. Not saying you won't in the future, but 240F is not a problem for a good synthetic to handle. Your pressure reading isn't that useful without a corresponding RPM. Generally speaking, so long as you've got over 10 psi per 1000 RPM, you're safe. Generally. 240F may get you right at that threshold, though. More information would be helpful.

You want to see a higher pressure for an extended period of time or your engine will not last very long
Take a read http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=63723

Increasing the volume of the system oil has absolutely no correlation to oil pressure drop. Pressure loss, due to oil coolers, is only a function of the amount of flow resistance offered by the oil cooling system. The OEM/Cusco set up has to exchange a lot of heat in a very small area, so I'm willing to bet it has dense tiny fins and offers a hell of a lot of resistance (anyone want to send me one I can cut open to find out?) A large oil cooler with large diameter lines will offer a much lower pressure drop than a small system. |

All pressure readings are at 7200 rpm. The cusco cooler had coils. It's free flowing inside but only one hole in and out about 1/2 inch dia each. Oil temp. is not too much of a concern but the resulting pressures probably are.
Added 2 run cool hood louvers to my undertray, dropped 3 deg C from my oil temp. for 106 C (224 F). |

22 deg C today. Just installed my TRD door stabilizers and went for a drive. I could drive wit some aggression for a few minutes and as long as I kept my oil temps under 102 C, I was seeing 49 to 55 psi at redline. Not a track solution but autoX worthy and with a vented hood (future purchase I hope) and 5W- 30, I should be able to extend my fun.
