Lightbulb Muddy distorted bass in your BRZ? Check this setting

I always wondered how Subaru allowed such a crappy sounding head unit to be installed in the BRZ. I'll be driving down the highway and when I turn the volume up to 30% - 50%, I get lots of distorted bass. I just discovered that most of this is caused by 1 setting. I am not sure if this applies to the FRS's different head units, but worth a shot, let me know if it helps for you FRS guys/gals.

Press the "Sound" button, and turn 'ASL' to off. The ASL is supposed to increase the volume of your media based on vehicle speed. The effect it does on this head unit is similar to the "Loudness" setting you see on most aftermarket head units. Refer to the picture in the attachment to see this setting.

I don't think they tuned this head unit properly to play low frequencies at more than 30-50% volume, so turning off "ASL" should definitely alleviate most of the bass distortion by about 80%

Let me know if this works for you guys!

Now, even with this setting off, there's still a bit of distortion, but I think the only other option is to install an aftermarket head unit that has a Low Pass Filter (LPF) to filter out the low notes from being sent to the speakers, and a Subwoofer to handle the bass.

A DSP Amplifier for the main speakers themselves should also help those of you who really want to crank up the volume.

You're right but damn, giving up what little bass I have left in this car, lol.

I plan to get a better head unit and install a sub.
