Lack of Bass

Have a question.. I don't mind the stock Navi unit in my BRZ. Do you think I would get a decent sound keeping the stock head, replacing the speakers, adding an amp, and a small subwoofer in the trunk? I really miss the the bass I used to get from my Bose system in the Infiniti. I dont need anything crazy just a decent sound, and bass. Also do you guys know if anybody has been able to install a backup camera to the stock Navi unit? Thanks for the help

From the last CNJ meet I think there was someone who will be looking into the backup camera since he knows someone that does a custom job.

I've also been wondering about this as well since the sound above 25 with my current equalizer settings starts to distort - low/high frequencies are turned up 3-4 notches below the max with a reverse bell curve plot. I know Subaru has a subwoofer (integrated amp?) that can be put in the trunk for ~$500, but never heard how it sounds. I'm also concerned about things rattling once there's more bass.

The speakers are by far the worst link. Replaced mine with stock HU and a new amp, and it sounds 1000% better. Waiting on my sub to come back as it was damaged in shipping.

The HU is actually pretty decent, unless you need something crazy, it's better to keep it than a new $1000 unit. I do have the occasional GPS glitch and it's not the fastest out there, but it's very usable non the less.

Yeah mine does the occasional GPS glitch too lol.. I just want the system to sound decent, have a nice kick, and not rattle when I raise the volume. My biggest thing is knowing if I can attach a backup camera to the existing unit. Since this unit is Subaru branded does anybody know if other cars have this unit with an option for a backup camera?

I know there is a back up camera option for most of the other subaru models with nav, I actually installed one in a forester a couple weeks ago and am doing another one in a legacy tomorrow. Basically on those radios there is an open port on the back of the radio and, http://ae64.com/, sells a plug that goes into it and has a video input for back up cam. However our BRZ nav does not have this open port (i checked) and no one else has anything for us either as far as I have been able to find.

Soon hopefully, I would like back up camera as well as VIM.

Ouch that sucks... So we wont be able to install a back up camera to the stock unit? Damn I guess I have no other choice but waiting to install a new head unit that allows a back up camera connection...

Doesn't mean we wont be able to, Just we aren't able to yet. None of my parts suppliers have anything yet, but on a lot of other cars with NAV there are other ways to create a video input, generally a good VIM kit will include a video input for backup camera.

That being said I dont see a part like this being high on a companies list to produce since this car is so low volume, so hopefully this radio makes it's way into more cars.

Thanks for the info!! I guess I'm going to try to wait a bit on replacing the head unit, I'm going to try replacing the speakers and amp first, and see how that works out..

Thats what I plan on doing, Im going to replace the front dash and door speakers and throw a 4 channel amp on them, then Im going to modify the rear speaker brackets and increase their size. Havent decided exactly what speaker and amp combo im gonna do in the rear but im hoping to get good sq from the front and bring a lot more bass out of the rear without having to add a heavy sub and box combo.

As long as I can get VIM on the factory NAV I will be keeping it.
