Downpipe / Straightpipe Difference?

Hello friends,

Pardon me for being such a noob (I'm still learning), my car is basically stock (lowered on ST coilovers), however I was looking into getting a new exhaust. I Just wanted to know what the difference is between downpipe / straightpipe is and if both will work without having to do any additional modifications to my car?

I found this (check link below) for a pretty reasonable price, I just don't want to order anything yet until I'm certain it'll work on my car..

Straight piping a car is when you have no cats, mufflers or resonators in your system. Its just a straight pipe (hence the name) back.

A downpipe is something found on turbo cars, you won't need to worry about that.

The exhaust you have linked is a cat back. You'll have no figment problems unless the piece isn't well made.

Are you getting the exhaust just for the noise factor or are you looking for a power bump?

Noise would be a good start, since stock is just so quiet it's embarrassing lol. Ideally, I'd like a mid-to-high range of noise, but nothing too obnoxious or illegal. I'm not concerned about power yet, that's something I'll look into later down the line when my wallet wants to participate. First step is affordable exhaust, then probably move onto wheels and tires.

well headers aren't foo far away from the catback pricing and you will get a nice bump in power and also a sound factor especially if you go UEL you can get a rumble, food for thought. I won't comment on the illegal part :p

A friend from a local meet told me to do the same. To just get headers. However, he mentioned open flash? and all this stuff I don't understand so if I were to get UEL headers, would I need to purchase anything else to have it installed? Also, if I purchase this Spec-D Exhaust, am I able to add on headers later? Or I would need to purchase another type of exhaust?

open flash is just a tuning solution for the car, it is not required for the headers but it does help, ecutek is another option as well. nothing else is required to swap headers. If you do purchase this exhaust you can add the headers later without issues as well. The other pieces to be replaced would be the overpipe and front pipe.

exhaust layout = headers > overpipe > front pipe > catback

I showed the amazon listing to a friend who understands cars better than I do, and he said from the picture that this exhaust was eliminating the catalytic converter? Trying to figure out if this is true, one. two, if it's bad? ....etc?

can somebody please verify. thanks a millon!

Cat-back exhaust means an exhaust that bolts on after the catalytic converter. Can't get simpler than that...

the twins have two cats... one in the header and one in the front pipe, as long as you have a stock header and front pipe you will retain the cats. Since you live in LA any changes to the cats will void smog for you. You will need to find a carb compliant header and a high flow cat for the front pipe. Also keep in mind removing the cats will cause your exhaust to smell and fail the sniffer.

the link you posted is just a catback, it will have negligible HP gain by itself... but will have a distinct change in sound.

A complete exhaust system includes Header - over pipe - front pipe - mid pipe - axle back (muffler(s) and tips)

catback is an axle back and mid pipe
