Door armrests

Tried a few searches and didn't turn up anything about this, so here's my thoughts on something I discovered today. I'd call this an issue I'd like to solve.

I've had my car for ~7 mos. and often times on the highway my right arm ends up sitting on the tunnel behind the e-brake and the left hand is on the wheel. This puts my left elbow on the driver's side door armrest.

I noticed today that there's a bit of a divot in that armrest from my elbow. I moved my arm for most of the drive home to see if it went back to normal, but it didn't. I'll check again tomorrow.

My guess is the padding is thin on the doors and not very high density, so it doesn't take much to permanently dent it and therefore make it not really padding anymore.

So my question is whether anyone has done anything to that area to put in thicker or higher density padding that might be a little more comfortable and longer lasting?

Hi cycleboy .....

I had a miata for several years that had even harder armrests.

I fixed the situation with a pair of these.

They are easy to put on, are quite comfortable and lasted for at least 7 years and 88,000 miles. Maybe they are still going strong ..??

I was thinking more about pulling off what's there and replacing the foam with either much higher density foam or maybe a gel. I haven't looked into how hard it is to pull the stock ones out to do something like this. As far as I've seen so far there aren't any aftermarket ones that offer more/stiffer padding that might stay padded longer.

They are easy to remove and JPM coachworks could add higher quality padding pretty easily.

Cool, that's kind of what I had in mind as I have my eye on their various keen pads and other alcantara goodies. I figured someone who sells those types of products could do it, just wasn't sure about the ease of removal.

@cycleboy The most difficult part is removing the door card, which is more time intensive than technically difficult. Once the Door card is removed it is extremely easy to remove the Door Uppers. The Door Uppers that we build use a thicker, higher quality, open-cell medium density foam, as compared to the factory part, and as such, they will not lose their shape after use and exhibit longer life and comfort.

Here is an very helpful and descriptive thread from @Trojan_SC demonstrating the step-by-stepremoval of the door card. http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13583

A pillow is cheap, not permanent, does not look like some ugly afterthought, or cost an arm and a leg.
