Can opening door too wide cause damages to hinge/door?
Hi guys,
So I'm standing at 6'3 and its quite difficult to get in and out of my BRZ and sometimes when parked on a side incline I tend to just let go of my door so it swings wide open and bounced back a little back. I have to have the door fully open for me to get out. Could this possibly damage my door? I didn't get in the habit of doing this but I have done it several times unintentionally. Is this mechanism designed to withstand such strains? Thanks |

My 91 Prelude eventually needed the driver side door hinges replaced because of this. Granted the doors were considerably heavier, and the hinges didn't start showing wear until 150k miles, I would definitely try to start catching my door, or at least letting it go gently.

Door retaining strap is more than up to this loading, that's what it's there for.
As long as nobody tries to fling the door open with force the strap will not break. The hinges are incredibly strong as they form part of the crash structure. Federal jaw requires that the doors take a specified impact without coming open. They are held closed at only three points: two hinges and a catch. They are robust. |
