Stock projectors FR-S, suitability for HID?? - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

Since this seems to be brought up regularly on various threads, I wanted to know from people that have tested HID's in their FR-S if they have found there to be unacceptable light dispersion or glare.

Those with tech qualifications that have looked at the cutoff etc please chime in.

Opinions welcome but really looking for technical specifics.

Hopefully we will get some decent input here and I will give my experience later in the thread.

I have them in mine. I think they have a pretty normal light spread pattern. Definitely not like a civic without projectors. There's some video on YouTube of someone with them showing how much glare there is. Look at that and decide if that's good for you or not.

They are fine for me I have the kit from TheRetroFitSource and they are great.

You may want to consider heat as well. I have read one case of a guy damaging his housing because the HID's run hotter. This as well as glare should be your primary issues of concern when doing a conversion.

False. 35 watts HID will run colder than halogens. More energy is converted into light it would be stupid to think it also creates more heat. 50 watts will run hotter though but do that at your own risks, especially if you don't upgrade the stock wiring.

As far as the stock projectors go, even without modification they are quite descent for HID, not as good as retrofit but they are good.

you should be able to see them. But yes, just flatten the bent up plate of metal as best you can.

The stock halogens are 55Watt, and are less efficient than HID's. (More wasted energy). Any normally available HID kit (35watt/50watt) will produce less heat and more light than a halogen.

The wiring is a non issue as well, as it's suitable for the 55watt stock bulbs, therefore the 35 or 50watt HID's would be using less power than the stock bulbs.
