Vibration when idle

The shifter vibrates when I'm stopped (say, at a traffic light).

I've sort of gotten used to it by now, but I also felt a rocking back and forth type vibration when driving on the highway above 50+. I'm not expert, wondering what would cause this. I have 35 psi in all tires, recently balanced and rotated.

check out the motor mounts. My older tC had an issue where it would idle EXTREMELY hard and it was 3 bad motor mounts

You might try turning down the shift knob itself ...... just in case it's lose.

Since ol @Tcoat is on R&R, you might do some searching on this forum ...... lots of folks have had shifter vibration problems.

What was your previous car? Frame of reference has a ton to do with this, I'd wager your car is perfectly fine and you're not used to a car with the shift lever directly mechanically attached to the engine and rather used to a powertrain that's numbed and more isolated from the driver.

My shift lever is rock solid compared to my POS pickup truck, but bounces around like a kid hopped up on sugar and caffeine compared to the BMW and Honda gearshifts I've felt.

On an A/T? That's interesting. I've driven one and don't remember any vibration at all. Does it shake in neutral?

If you pop the hood and watch the engine idle (with a friend in the driver's seat) Does it shake either in neutral or drive?

If it's not in warranty, I suggest making friends with someone via the regional subforum with whom you can compare notes.

Hypothetically, if you were looking to trade up to a newer one <wink wink> you could take it for a test drive.

Also, I suggest editing your OP to mention that it's an Auto. That'll help with the responses. Be prepared for some trollage. Fuck 'em. Water off of a duck.

I should have mentioned that the tires were at 40psi when I had this problem - at 35 it's much better.

I'm coming from a Lexus ES350, so perhaps it just takes some getting used to. Either way, the car is rock solid and I'm loving it. Just dreading the thought of the upcoming Boston winter...

For what it's worth, in my AT, it does not vibrate whatsoever.

Well, perhaps I should consider digging deeper. Could be the motor mounts I suppose.

I'll see if it shakes in neutral.

Just checked: doesn't shake in neutral or park, just D or S (I almost always drive in manual mode w/ traction control off).

Now I'm a bit curious about this as well. My car is an auto (2014), and there is some in-cabin vibration when idling. I'd never notice it, but I installed a Broadway mirror a few months ago (clips onto the OEM mirror) - the mirror is great while driving, but I do notice it vibrating/shaking quite a bit when the car is stopped at a light, etc (which made me curious, as I've mentioned it doesn't happen while driving, which I would think would cause more vibration if it were due to how the mirror is mounted.)

That kind of vibration is normal. Because of the high compression ratio and very light rotating assembly, these machines do reflect back quite a bit of the pulses from the power stroke up through 2K RPM.

When the transmission is engaged at a standstill, the engine has to apply just a smidge of throttle to maintain idle rpm. That's the extra vibration you feel.

OP, if that's all it is for you, no worries. I know Ammo's car well. It's tip top.

Gotcha, thanks. The only other quirk with my car is I hear a high pitched noise from what sounds like the front driver side wheel when hitting 47+mph and engaging 5th gear.
