FA20 with V161 trans

Okay, So i'm going to be building a high 10 or low 11 second Turbo FRS with a closed deck Fa20. After talking with many people, I'm lead to the conclusion that it will be much more reliable to swap a V161 in than try to build an AZ6 to hold 450 RWTQ. Does anyone make a suitable, quality kit for this?

T56 Super Magnum seems to be the best production transmission available for a reasonable amount of money from what I can tell. I've been waiting on someone to come up with a solution for one for the S2000 and 240sx (with SR, not LSx) for a while now. The Getrag V160/161 Supra 6 speed is too expensive and heavy, and although really strong, not bulletproof... The Magnum/Super Magnum is used in the Viper ACR, among others, and is actually supposed to have a really nice shift feel despite being built to hold 700 ft-lb of torque. I want one.

what does close deck do?/mean? Better compression?

Whats the benefit?

edit: amateur thinking: Better cooling? FA20 does put out a lot of heat, no?

Pictures are kinda self explanatory. Open deck has better cooling/flow however there is a huge trade-off in strength. Without proper re-sleeving an open deck engine is easily compromised in high horsepower applications, whereas closed deck is superior due to having more meat, slightly less flow means slightly worse cooling powers but theres always a way to cool the engine more efficiently. Theres is no substitute for block strength though.

The supra 6 speed would be bulletproof with that power I run over 1000 through mine and it's done great I've seen people not blow them until 1400hp...

T56 would be far more cost effective if they make a good kit to adapt it to the FA20. If they go go with the T56

I think it has more to do with how much torque it can handle, as opposed to horsepower, no?

Most T56s are probably going to have lousy gear ratios for a high-revving inline 4 in a drag application.

Gearing ratios can always be changed. However, the idea is to have room for "improvement" down the road.

Heavily leaning on Outfront Motorsports. Editing op to reflect current list of items, T56 not an option. Will be going V161 instead. Better Gearing.

They make a million different ratios for the T56 you know.

Availability and cost alone would make me go to the T56, let alone any other benefit.

You did a pretty good run up from a non intercooled sprintex car, to a full build all of a sudden. Did you win the lottery? If you are dead serious about this there is a lot of research to do before posting a new idea every day in one forum thread.

There are many topics on the supra forums about T56 swaps, might check out some of those.....
