Do not need sand. With LSD you may try to use handbrake when start moving on slippery surface. As soon as you get moving, car is very controllable even if SLIP light is almost constantly ON.

It's just what I had laying around the house. Not planning on actually using the sand, just using as weight. I asked the old lady if I could stick her in the trunk for the winter but for some reason she said no..........

Just got home, did a 40 mile drive home from a buddy's place. A ride that was normally 50 minutes took about 90 instead. Blizzak WS70s performed flawless, my only real limitation was visibility. I had sections of road with 4-5 inches and the car moved just fine, and tracked straight the whole way home. If you have to be out just take your time!

ws70 worked like a champ getting home last night in the middle of everything,

the return trip is mostly uphill, there were a few spots where the back end was kicking around a bit while climbing, but nothing that was a huge issue, front tires never lost grip for pointing the car making it very predictable despite the looseness in the ass.

overall; frz wasn't nearly as good as my forester on the same tires in a storm (expected), but it still got us home with no issues or oh shit moments.

I've had winter tires on since the end of November, when it was under 40 every day.

I'm running Dunlop Winter Sport M3s @ stock tire size (215/45R17) on stock wheels. No drama at all so far. Now I'm just paranoid of all the other drivers on the road since most likely have inadequate tires for winter conditions.

There's the problem. People willing to risk everyone else's safety out of pure stubbornness or cheapness. Please folk use winter tires in the WINTER! We get real snow and cold here.

Snow tires cost about the same as an insurance deductible.

I'd rather pay for the tires given the choice

Seriously, just get snows. You can get a set with rims on craigslist for like dirt cheap.
