Simple things like this, I'd rather do myself (especially when others have already documented the fact that their dealer solutions weren't long-lived). More complicated things that require their technical expertise or physical tools/parts, I bring it in. In any event, I did contact my dealer to ask them if they were aware of the leaking head plate issue and it was news to them, but they take note of it. I ended up fixing it myself though, and my fix has survived a couple hundred miles with no further issues thus far. |

Speaking of the oil leak, did the engineers put that sharp ass exhaust clamp there to mangle our hands while fixing the oil leak or what?

LOL - I did my fix after I replaced my overpipe, so I don't think I ran into that issue. Is it part of the heat shield on the stock overpipe?

Dropped the car off this morning but they didn't get to it till late afternoon and they want time to let it cure. Looks like I'll have to pick it up tomorrow and drive the loaner till then:

I'll ask what they are using tomorrow when I pick the car up but they originally told me they were ordering a kit and it sounded like it included a new plate and bolts.

So, I picked up the car and the dealership replaced the plate and all three bolts holding the plate to the engine. They said that all Subaru parts and materials were used, and the sealer looked like Fuji Bond gray. The only problem (besides taking 2 days and the giant gas sucking loaner) is that after the drive home I still smelled oil and it was stronger this time. I'm hoping that it's from some oil leaking on the exhaust while they had the plate off the car and that it will burn off after driving a couple times. I'll update in a few day if things get better or worse.

Ok, so I picked up my car today and the service manager stated the back head plate was re-sealed and a gasket was added to prevent it from leaking. I did a quick inspection at the dealer and then drove off. I get to a Holiday gas station to fill up and I noticed my exhaust was fuming a feint white smoke after the car had been shut off. I sniff the hood area and notice a feint oil burning smell but not as noticeable as before. I'm assuming the feint smell and fumes from the exhaust tips are from the excess burning from the leftover oil that had dripped onto the headers. I drive my car home and touch the plate and feel no leak. Hopefully it is a perminant fix. Only time will tell. I will update if I notice any leak.

I've found that silicone (RTV) of some types can be unreliable when using it on a thin piece of sheet metal. Gaskets can be better, but for the inexperienced, can also lead to problems. If a piece like this is over torqued when using a gasket, it will end up getting warped, or cupped at the bolt holes. One of the best sealants is this stuff...http://www.magicracing.com/ThreeBond...1104_p_84.html I've been using it on bikes, cars, and ATVs for years. It's good stuff. Most motorcycle shops will have it in stock, and swear by it.

jimbobrand - Can you update us with any part numbers for the replacement plate and bolts from the service ticket?
I was at Toyota yesterday having some work done on the 4Runner and stopped by and talked to the service manager about this issue. He didn't show any TSB or etc for the issue and was going to talk to Scion. Any part numbers and etc that you could supply might be helpful. |

I didn't know that, but it doesn't surprise me. It's good to know auto makers use it as well as the bike manufacturers.
