We'll see how well it holds.

Hmm. 12 lbs isn't very much. But if that what the book says . . . .

Well technically it says 11.8, but my cheap little 3/8ths torque wrench doesn't have that kind of precision

That is all that is needed most times, I work in aerospace, we shoot stuff into orbit torqued to less than 10 in-lbs. Anything more and you're just stressing the screw or the threads. It's only a little plate that plugs a hole.

I'm sure you're right.

It's just that it's leaking and all, and this is an area of the car that is subject to a considerable amount of vibration. And, um, I over-torque everything like a maniac. It's the only fun I get to have in life.

Try to drive it for 30 minutes and then feel it again. I thought mines was dry until after a 30 minute drive with 15 minute to cool I touched the plate and I had fresh oil on my hands. argh!

Drove my car all around yesterday and so far so good, the Permatex "The Right Stuff" is keeping the oil in place.

According to Permatex, the gasket is ready within minutes of application, but I let it sit for an hour before I started the car up to back it down the ramps (had the back ramped up so the oil would stay in place) and let the engine warm up for a few minutes just to check for any issues. The car then sat overnight and then I drove it around all day, no issues. I'll continue to monitor it and report back if the gasket fails over the next week.

I just did mine with the Black Permatex Right Stuff also. Hopefully it seals. Going to left mine sit over night before I start it up. Mine was barely leaking before but I'm anal. Hope it doesn't end up being worse. Getting the old sealant off the backing plate is kind of a pain.

I've done mine 3x and it's slowly coming back. I use a gasket scraper, also - you said anal so lol.

I took my car out from storage and started the car up. While it idle, I noticed a burning smell. I couldn't figure out where it was coming from so I open the hood but i could not locate the source. I decide to take the car for a spin after warming up and after driving few minutes I notice the smell was coming through the vents. I parked to open up the hood and saw fumes coming from the the bottom of the motor from the passenger side. I look for leaks and found oil the bottom splash shield and oil on the plate everyone had been describing. I am taking her in to the dealer tomorrow. I'm frustrated but am glad that I am not the only one to have this problem.

You can buy a sheet of gasket material of your preferance, use the plate as a template, and make a custom gasket for this,..... problem solved,...permanently.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/fel-3060/overview/

Shocked nobody has suggested this yet, flimsy stamped plate like that with low torque needs some material for give and to fill the gaps,....thats why you guys are having repeated issues with just sealant......no bueno.

My OEM plate had no leaks. I installed the AVO oil pump in that place, created a Ultra Permaflex gasket, and not leaks either.

I'm going to take the car in, file a claim, and get it fixed by the dealer. I mean come on, this is a new car and it's already leaking oil! Stealerships need to know about this serious problem and fix it because many FRS/BRZ owners have this problem. If it leaks again after the stealership repairs it, I'll repair it myself by making a custom gasket like what you suggested because it makes more sense to a perminant solution of fixing this problem. Thanks for the suggestion.

The dealers/Toyota does need to know about it. All the people performing their self-made fixes is a great and industrious thing, just let the dealer document it first.
