Yeah but it shows in a track environment the Toyota engineers thought it was a good idea on a car with a lightly modified engine. So, might be a good idea for those doing track days.

A counter argument to this is that Toyota have ran several GT86's on the track for the press prior and during the official launch. Some of these cars were driven fairly harshly and I have't read any press articles of the car's bogging down on track yet, loosing power etc.
My opinion is that it really depends on ambient temperature, how long the track is and how many laps you do before you come back into the pits. If you do 5 laps of a short track and use 1 lap as warm up and 1 lap as cool down, then oil will probably be OK. If you want to do an endurance race then you definitely need an oil cooler. |

This thread is doing down the same path all other regarding Oil Coolers. I will repeat it. This is NOT a thread to voice our opinions on how it is or isn't necessary an oil cooler, we have had a lot of those already.
This is a thread to do thorough testing as a community and based on testing results get a definitive conclusion of how the Oil Cooler IS/ISN'T needed |

This is a great thread. People sometimes forget it's much more difficult to build a dual purpose car that functions well as a DD and a Track Car.
I wish someone would also take the initiative like you are @Sportsguy83 and do the same study for the 6AT. I just don't have the time these days |

Not trying to get in trouble here with this post, but here is a great analogy, trying to make a point- I dont see the point of all the debate and discussion I guess ( if the post offends anyone PM me before you try an get me banned and I can edit it if its too over the top)
Guys, its like sunscreen or a condom, you dont HAVE To wear it, but wearing it lets you have more fun when you're at the beach, and lets you enjoy gettin busy with a lower risk of getting pregnant. Can you track it OE 'unprotected', sure, but why risk it if youre planning on pounding on it in the heat and making her scream? Will 0w20 oil be fine at 250F? yes, it will be just fine. Good clean oil and those temps= no problem for the DD. You can still get burned or get pregnant, just much less likely with the precuations, right? I've never tracked a car without a oil cooler present. I also admit I have gotten a girl pregnant while using protection. so adding an oil cooler is no 'insurance policy' against failure, thermal or otherwise, but seems anyone who wants to get busy better put one on, or risk getting burned, or knocked up etc. We all know how to take calculated risk, calculate yours. No brainer, add oil cooler, feel safer tho a bit poorer, pick your flavor, home made, Perrin, HKS if HPDE and track are words outta your mouth. there. Now you have my 2 pennies of helpfulness. /end thread? For the record, my wifes DD 86 is NOT FI, and will never ever see the track. Ever. It is still getting an oil cooler, wont hurt MPG and will help keeping oil cool. Those both plusses in my book, sold.Does this apply to the guy living north of Mt Shasta or up in Portland? Prolly NOT, unless youre tracking it or doing HDPE. The fact that our car doesnt have one from factory has nothing at all to do with engineers or whats best for the car, on or off track. Its about cost to market, and we'd all have paid a few hundred bucks more if it had the oil cooler OE. We dont know this 'girl' that well(our cars are still new) and she comes off frisky and very ready and willing to play, and its pretty sunny where I leave, so bring on the protection, I say spend the money add the cooler. It IS the right thing to do.(Disclaimer: just my opinion!) Quote:
I am all for getting data and all, but I can not volunteer my car on a track for data acqusition of temps without a oil cooler. wont do it. not trying to stir the pot, just wanting to help as household with two FT86 cars both getting oil coolers. I feel pretty good dispensing advice that says 'play it safe if you're gonna be in the sun and trying to have fun' Last edited by Huehuecoyotl; 03-06-2013 at 11:29 AM. |

@Huehuecoyotl - I respect your opinion greatly, and getting enough people to say "if you ever track your car, get a cooler" is useful for the forum.
The point of this thread is to remove opinion from the equation. Example: "I ran 3 20 min track sessions in 80 degree heat... and my max oil temps according to the Torque app were 260 F. Engine is stock, except for intake and exhaust. NO COOLER was used." Enough data points like that, and each person can get a good estimate of the max temps for their specific situation (location and usage). Compare that to the desirable oil temp range (discussed above)... voila! an informed decision without the need for 13 paragraphs of sunblock and condoms. The forum is a better place with both types of discussion though.

Just because you wont track your car without a cooler doesn't mean everyone else feels the same. Many of us in CA are not running coolers and we track regularly. We will provide the numbers. Honestly, it may not have been clear. Maybe a new thread titled "Post your track day oil temps here and indicate if a cooler was used" should be started. |

I apologize if the poll setup wasnt to your liking
Most folks seem to agree, whether running your oil at 275 is cool or not, above 260, its oil cooler time. Thats all I was trying to further/facilitate with this discussion, I still think its data of value, if we see everyone and their grandma running oil at 260, well, we likely have bigger fish to fry but we can always add a how hot is too hot poll. I'm simply trying to see what the masses are running, you and I in TX and AZ are gonna be on the hotter side if we choose. I was brought up thinking that every 20 deg of temp over 240 cuts the life of your motor in half, admittedly very conservative by todays standards. |

Most? no sorry, that's your opinion alone. Many people have their own opinion on this matter and its better to say that you should do some oil analysis and testing and make sure your bearings aren't wearing prematurely. What cuts your engine life in half is whether or not your oil is actually doing its job. If its not doing its job at the current temps, then you could install a oil cooler or try another brand that can actually deal with the actual temps. I'm sure theres plenty of other people that aren't voicing their opinion on this matter.
