ELM 327 Bluetooth on iPhone 5

So I ordered a cheap $15 ELM 327 Bluetooth OBD2 adapter on eBay. I read that Bluetooth OBD readers couldn't be used with iOS unless you jailbreak. I always jailbreak my devices but there was a long wait for iPhone 5 users. I got an app from Cydia called RoqyBT/RoqyOBD and then I installed Dash Command. RoqyBT allows the OBD2 reader to connect to the iOS device but there is a 5 euro cost. I paid the license fee, and setup using IP in Dash Command. 127.0.0.1 and port 35000 had to be manually entered into Dash Command so RoqyBT can communicate with the Dash Command app.

So I have to say it works and it works really well!! Dash Command is a really cool app packed full of information and data logging capabilities. It doesn't have the customization capabilities of Torque but for those that only have an iOS device this is the next best thing. Setup was way easier than I anticipated and there is no lag at all when monitoring information. I was impressed by how accurate and fast the tach is on Dash Command and all of the other gauges work well too. I'm going to make a mount to temporarily mount my iPhone to see how well the accelerometer features work. I was planning on mounting a Nexus 7 tablet permanently for the Torque app and I've had some discussions with @2forme regarding a full android deck so we'll see where this project goes... I've been short on time lately but hopefully in the not too distant future I'll have time to really make something cool to integrate a tablet or android deck with this platform car.

There wasn't a ton of info on the jailbreak/roqyBT/Dash Command setup when I searched so I wanted to share my results here incase any of you have been considering this mod...hope this helps. Any questions, post them here.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm running a jailbroken iPhone 4 as the primary video/audio source on my AVH-X5500BHS and was wishing for a way to use dashlink without paying for their overpriced hardware. I'm pretty sure i've got that bluetooth obd2 sensor here already. gonna give it a shot today!

Which versions of roqyBT did you install? I see roqyBT and roqyBT4 and roqyOBD4 .... not sure which one(s) to get installed. I have the elm327 but when I tried this on my old iPhone I was never able to get the phone to recognize the ELM 327..

Thanks in advance.

Did you pay for the license on your old iPhone? If you don't pay for the license then RoqyBT won't communicate with any other apps. I believe the most current is BT4/OBD4...just install the RoqyOBD app and the BT will install automatically. Pay the 5 euro license fee and you're ready to rock!

I've been downloading different dashboards from within the app today...there's some really cool ones and they're all free. Just go into the settings and you will see where you can view and download.

I can't seem to get the roqyBT4 app to recognize my ELM 327 device. Under the configuration settings for roqy I have

Current device type selection = Generic OBD token
Device PIN Code = 1234
MTK = Off
Automatic Pairing on Data Request = On

Are those correct? Maybe I just have a broken ELM device...

This is very tough to configure - the ELM seems to connect up to my laptop no problem so it must be something with my iPhone. At first I thought it was because I have an AppRadio with BT but even when the radio is disconnected my phone still will not connect to the ELM....I'm almost ready to give up for the 2nd time around..haha.

Make sure the Bluetooth in your phone settings is off. Then open Roqy and turn on Bluetooth from within the app. You should see "OBD connection" under devices and select it. It will say "connected" once you do. Then, press the home button so you don't close the Roqy app, and open dash command. It will connect and the light at the top will turn green.
If you don't pay the license fee and verify that your license is registered in Roqy then none of this will work.

And your phone can't be connected to the radio at the same time. Make sure the Bluetooth is turned OFF in phone settings. If its connected to the radio it can't connect to the ELM.
