Trying to get warranty work or a new engine because you messed up a pulley install is fraud of the worst kind. That's the type of crap that gets Subaru more interested in "are these cars coming in for service modified" and Audi style "we just scanned your ECU and it has a tune, your car has been denied for all future warranty work including TSB work" because they begin to lose that much more money to people who can't pay to play. |

seems to me like the pulley wasn't installed properly and damaged your crank. hopefully it's like the others said and it's that billet keyway. I'm really hoping for you it's nothing more than that.

Ive avoided warrantied cars in the past due the BS hassle having to prove it wasnt your fault. I really have no remorse if the warranty program is abused beyond repair after some of the run ins I have seen. |

You mentioned "as illegal as it is" it would "save [his] butt in the long run". That's definitely advocating fraud.

I like how this thread is now and ethics debate, take it to Sunday school and argue it with menopausal Mrs. Donnington and lets talk carzzzzz.
Should be a warning to be super careful doing diy installs like this.

Wait wait wait wait... Your telling me... That if you installed a pulley, and for some reason, it failed.. You would not take it off install the proper pulley, and take it to the dealership.. You would instead keep it on and at the very least give up your power train warranty for the car.. I don't believe in say insurance fraud because you can't pay for your car and stuff... But I worked at big dealerships and know all cases of "fraud" it would be simple to see that there are tool marks and stuff... But I'd pass the guy along and swap out the o-ring and stuff... There are way more things being passed off then a o-ring swap... Really it's wrong whether its. 10$ repair or 10k repair.. But I don't see holes in your hands and feet to be able to judge anyone on what they do lol

Way more people have not had issues then the few that have.. It's best that if you don't know anything about this stuff to just have someone that does do the install.. It's not hard, but things can happen.. Someone that's well versed on this stuff might've noticed the washer o-ring and key being mis aligned..
20 years ago when I started auto repair, I was working on a old front wheel drive Mitsubishi... A eclipse.. We swaped out the trans because the gears went out in it, a new car for the most part, but the guy voided his warranty and we went to the junk yard picked up the trans and installed it.. About 30 feet the new trans we swapped out cracked across the whole bell housing.. No problem the yard said bring it back and we will swap it.. In went the new one.. And the same thing.. I was baffled, swapping a trans is pretty straight forward, even for someone that's just got into mechanics.. This time the yard wasn't so happy in trading for a new one and plain and simple said this is it lol... I was talking to a friend that went to UTI with me, at the time we were still high school students.. And was going through possibilities.. He asked about the dowel pins that suppose to stay in the engine... Ahhhhhhh that's what happened, they was still in the original trans, got a new pair and never had another problem... It's little things like that, that make someone that knows what he's doing and someone that pay attention to detail, to the person that doesn't have a clue but following a book or instructions.. |
