Anyone know what the widest wheel will fit in the rear of these cars without any real modification? And is higher number offset better for a wider tire setup

They are concerned with bearing damage..
Or like sunken batteship look..

Or they hate anything close to flush..

Offset isn't directly related to tire width other than a lower offset sticks out more allowing the use of a wider wheel/tire cmbo..

A +35 to a +45 is (obviously) only a 10mm difference.. Hardly a big deal.. Unless of course you don't have 10mm to spare..

So would +35 or +45 be better for fitting say a 305 wide tire flush without having to run a lot of camber.

I dont think a 305 will ever fit up front on stock fenders. Rear it would be close. and need around ET42 and still need need about -2 camber.

I would run 305s square if they fit and I had enough power to turn big heavy tires.

a 45 sidewall will make the tires to beefy. Believe me. I had that set on my GT4 with the tire size you want.

with an 18x10 wheel, what offset would you suggest to fit a 285/40/18 flush?

Around 30. But that's a loaded question.

As already mentioned, go with a 40. That'll be the closest to the OEM diameter and won't cause gearing/speedo issues.
