According to Michelin, 8" is the max recommended rim width for the OE tire. However, every other Brand of 215/45/17 on the market that i've seen specs a 8.5" as the max. In the tire stretch scene, this is not even considered a stretch. There is no danger of running this width on the OE tire.
With the safety question answered, the advantage of stretching the sidewall to max spec is that it produces less tire roll during hard cornering thus improving steering response. There is an added benefit of an increased contact patch because more of the shoulder is contacting the ground thus providing more grip. ![]() This tire loading illustration demonstrates the same principle of a narrow rim width vs a wide rim width on the contact patch of a tire. There are several reasons car manufacturers wouldn't max out rim width and they include but are no limited to cost savings, better fuel economy, weight reduction, and comfort. Cars made for performance tend trade off the above mentioned aspects for better handling and road feedback. As for damage to the rim, there is slightly less cushioning from the sidewall when it's stretched so there is a slight increase in risk of a pot hole ding but the OE tire is a 215/45 which is less susceptible than a 215/40 or 215/35. Also, as you can see from my pics, the OE tire rim protector is quite large and still protects the rim from most curb rash. |

This is my plan as well in the spring - new 8" wheels with the stock tires for at least a season if not two. Then new tires (either 215 or 225)

I enquired for some wheels today. Advans RS in 17x8 +37 which I thought would fit.
However the Advan rep says 'they are not available for the 86, and listed ones which are available for the 86: 17x8 in offsets such as +48 and +50. May I ask why he may say this? He hasn't responded to me. |

^ no idea.. Some people think 8 +37 is aggressive.
Be sure the pcd is 5x100. , not x114.

How about a set of stock Scion TC wheels on stock suspension? Found a set on CL cheap and thinking they'd be good starter AutoX wheels...
A bit of Google foo seems to say 17x7 at 45 offset. Not sure what tires yet...ideas?

OK, I'm sure someone has already asked, but I cannot find the thread. I am looking at the 16" package from Tire Rack for winter tires, since the local tire shop admitted they would just order them from TR anyway.
http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/resul...3&autoModClar= They're a 16x6.5" with a 50mm offset. The rest of the info if needed is at the link. I am thinking of running 205/55R16 Continental winter tires on them. Thoughts? Thank you so much, btw - this is confusing. |

I've got the stock tires on my 17x9.0 Rotas and I abuse them... no issues here.

Can someone help me here?
Should the offset of the front tires be more than the back? or the other way around? And has anyone had experience with toyo tires? Toyo Poxes 4 to be exact. |

Looking at getting RPF1s 18x9.5 +38 all around.
Based on calcs, it looks like the closest match to stock are 245/35/18s. After that, it's 255/35/18s. The 255 have a much greater selection of tires then the 245s do. Currently on stock suspension, and looking to lower it .8-1 inch via either RCE Yellows or something similar, and add OEM camber bolts up front. Will there be an issue with either size? |

So much wheel width, so little tire..
To each their own.
