have you checked to see if the mp3 file on the USB works on a PC or another device like mp3 stereo or TV with USB ports?

if it does play then maybe the unit in the car can't read something embedded inside the mp3 file? (just taking a shot in the dark)

I don't think the GPS was programmed to keep up with drifting around corners :P

Damn, that means our top spec car has the same stereo as your GT. Oh well.

Other way round, I think it's _always_ expecting you to be drifting.

Damn it. Works fine with a burned MP3 disc. Starts from where you left off after powering off the car. Looks like it's a problem with just the USB system.

I'll ask Toyota if there's a software upgrade that might fix it.

Thanks for all your help everyone.

I haven't used the usb input yet, but that sounds annoying. So far I have grudgingly used Bluetooh stream. While the quality isn't great, I have never had bluetooth streaming so at the moment it is a novelty lol

For those with the GTS, do u use the USB port on the head unit or the one on the dash?

I can only get the one on head unit to play songs.

I've yet to try the USB port next to the AUX in port. I've only tried the one on the head unit. from your post it seems like the USB port next to the audio port is power only for recharging phones or docking apple stuff (read it some where in the manual).

I haven't tried pluging in my iPhone into the USB port on the dash. Maybe I should.

Nope, both are fully functional usb ports for data and charging.

I have been using the one near the centre console aux thingo, not the one on the headunit, works exactly the same as the headunit one

Have you tried another flash drive with different music on it? Also did you "eject the flash drive" from the computer or just remove it? Had a few issues myself of late because I hadn't "safely removed hardware". Had to format my drive & put the music back on.
Not sure playlist will work via usb either. I'd take it back to the dealer if the problem persists.

In the day that I've had my car, I've already noticed some HU bugs.
1. In the USB menu I switch to Video Mode. It starts to index my USB, gets to 5%, then the software crashes and needs to reboot the HU. After reboot it AGAIN tried to index. And this cycles forever. (I had to quickly switch it back to Audio Mode)
NOTE: This might be due to the large video files on my flash drive, but still. Power cycling is not really acceptable as a "release" product. I might have to call up and see if this is a known issue.

2. Cannot play m4a files (I know they are rubbish anyway). Trying to play one will result in USB playback freezing in such a way that nothing is playing, and switching to another track does not work. It will continue to try to play the m4a file until you actually delete it from the flash drive.

Further to the original post.

Toyota no help so contacted Fujitsu Ten, the manufacturer.

They responded - "What you are experiencing on USB playback is normal operation. There is a difference between CD and USB however this is the specification of the unit."

And, when I asked it there was a firmware upgrade to fix it they responded - "No, not at this stage. Should there be any changes in the future though, your dealer will be your best contact."

So, looks like other than upgrading the head unit this is an issue that can't be solved.
