what it really boils down to is marketing. They put it in there for the experience. i am sorry i dont have the source but i read that it was quiet in the passenger seat so they designed the noise generator to enhance the experience of driving and riding in this car. |

I will be removing mine. The only noise I want to hear from my car is the actual car, not some stupid noise generator.

I recently did this delete. Went to Lowes and spent a few bucks. One is a 1.25 inch PVC cap. Use this to delete the sound tube from the main intake. The next is a 3/4" plastic cap. I found this a few aisles down from the PVC aisle with some brass fittings and what not. I just shoved this in from the engine bay through foot-well hole. It may seem a little big, but it fits right in. All together it's cheap, less than $4 and works. Sorry for the over exposed white cap.

It's weird that they decided to place that noise generator AFTER the MAF sensor. If it wasn't, it would be an easy place to wire up your Nitrous or something or another if you were to do something like that. NOT SAYING THAT I WOULD PEOPLE! And since it happens after the MAF sensor the extra places for the air to get stuck at might cause extra turbulence that would cause the air to not slide into the throttle body as easily or if there was a design flaw that air might leak out and the readings would be incorrect. IDK, just my observations.
NO I AM NOT GONNA PUT NITROUS ON MY CAR! STOP, DON'T CLICK QUOTE. DON'T BOLD THE SENTENCE ABOUT NITROUS! GODDAMIT.... |

I didn't bother with the weight savings but wanted to get rid of the 3-4 dB of simulated car sound. Since the "generator" itself is actually a diaphragm that separates intake air from cabin air, I just took the small hose off the cabin side, plugged it with a rubber stopper that fit snugly (I forget the ID of the hose) and couldn't be drawn into the generator, then reattached the hose. I think I spent $0.30 at OSH.
For those who don't know, sound pressure (dB) is measure on a logarithmic scale. That means a +/- 10dB difference is perceived as being twice as or half as loud (depending on which way you're comparing). In that context, a 3-4 dB reduction is pretty significant. I think it would be about the equivalent of lining the inside of your car with Dynamat or some other similar sound absorbing material. |

This issue gets confused all of the time. Decibels are on a logarithmic scale, so an increase of 10dB is equivalent to a 10 fold increase in power. A 3dB increase is equivalent to a 2 fold increase in power.
Unfortunately, that is where most of the confusion comes in. "Power" only refers to acoustical output. As far as perceived loudness goes: a 10dB increase would sound like it was twice as loud. Typically speaking, a difference of 3dB is about the minimum value that a typical person will hear any noticeable difference in sound output. Some trained ears can hear a difference of 1-2dB, but the average person will not notice it. We noticed a difference in cabin sound, an amount we referred to as "significant." We then used a dB meter to quantify those results. This is one of those things that will just come down to preference between people that like the intake noise in the cabin, and those who do not.
