Why is the FA20 rougher than the Mazda PE-VPS (2-litre inline-4 engine in the MX_5)? In principle, the horizontal-4 layout of the FA-20 should be dynamically more balanced than the Mazda inline-4 PE-VPS. And the PE-VPS doesn't have a counter balancing shaft to dampen the vibration, so it shouldn't be smoother than the FA20.
Alas, the crank pulley seems to be the culprit. After I have installed the Fluidampr (and light weight water pump and alternator pulleys), the FA20 becomes much smoother. Did not notice any power gain or loss though. |
