Is building motor worth doing? Looks like guys with OE motors last longer than ones who had it built. It has been a huge waste of money for me.

To be fair, there are a couple things to note here.

1. People are more likely to post about a bad experience- certainly we don't have an accurate tally of blown built engines vs blown stock engine

2. People build an engine to treat it rough. People wearing ski boots seem to have more broken bones than sneakers, so why wear them, right?

3. A built engine is just as prone to failure (if not more so) from poor craftsmanship or tuning or use. At least with the oem engine, it's far less likely to have been had clearance somewhere or suffer from UNIQUE problems. It's just a matter of investment in reliability, testing, and time in proofing your work.

i went with a an IAG shortblock and a competent mechanic when I blew my OEM after recall. I don’t know if you’d consider it “built” as I stayed NA however for the extra 1,400 I felt it was good insurance.

LOL. This thread skipped 7 years...

That said, I've been curious about a built motor.

Another built motor disaster - a big one at that! Was built by a "reputable" place, too (DSport):

Feel sorry for the guy as he's clearly invested A TON into it.

Another prominent failure was for Ian Barton who has a build thread on here as well. He had another "reputable" shop, Mazworx, build his motor: https://www.ft86club.com/forums/show...13157&page=152

For reference, I'm really curious about this type of info as well but I started a slightly different thread inquiring about who still has a stock engine boosted. That can be found here: https://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=134549

Are modern engines too damn hard to build? This isn't the first make i've seen with hobbyists blowing up built motors.
