So there are plenty of reasons for a wider wheel (and tire) even for this weight class. Some people will disagree, but really, wider wheels and tires don't provide more grip, they provide better heat dissipation. So if you intend to run the car on track, wider wheel and tire combos are better (assuming you don't pick up so much weight that you are inhibited because of it)

A 100hp miata on 9" wide wheels with even just a 225 series tire is faster lap after lap compared to something smaller. Power only effects linear acceleration. But lateral acceleration doesn't care about power, so every horsepower level can benefit from this.

not saying this is why the original poster did it...

Yeah, the increase to a wider wheel was all about cosmetics, since I still retained a 215-width tire on the wider wheel. My contact patch is almost exactly the same as the stock tires.

Haha, I somehow missed your graphic, but just saw it. Yup, at the moment I am mexiflush but I will try to rectify that soon.

I actually love this rim but this is what I will do if I buy this rim.

Reduce the width to 8
Hike up the height to 18
Offset hike up to 35

Thanks for showing me this rim on your car so I can get tips.

Be careful, the narrower versions of this wheel have a convex face instead of a nice concave look. I was going to buy another set of the 17x8 and install two on the front, then sell the leftovers to another FR-S/BRZ owner but I realized that the narrower wheels look different and wouldn't mix and match well.

O Rly? Thanks again for that bit of info. I hate convex and it must be concave only.

But as you can see this offset isnt too crazy once its lowered and stuff. Doesnt even need much crazy camber, just what ya get from lowering this kinda suspension. I might actually suggest a lil bigger tire, like a 225/45 or 235/40 for a lil better fender clearance for the flush crowd, but for drifting at stock hp this will do me fine

Have you thought about 225/45? They add just tid bit more sidewall over stock, so you would probably end up being around stock diameter. The drop should add some camber too so it probably wouldn't rub... Just thinking out loud

I think the wheels look great!

Threw out my bald rear tires and swapped the front 215/50-17s to the rear, then installed some 215/40s in the front. Bolted in my D2 coilovers and cranked the front camber to max. Here is the result... same wheels, no spacers, fits nice if you like the JDM cambered look. (if not, keep it to yourself please)
