Good thing I read this! My next oil change is coming up real soon and was seriously considering buying one of these drain plugs. I guess I'll just stick with ol' faithful and keep my oem plug

To be clear, I never said there was anything wrong with the stock oil drain plug nor did I say a magnetic oil drain plug was necessary. I never felt that it was necessary before or after this incident.
The testimony of using no magnets in the engine and having no problems is not a valid argument against the use of magnetic oil drain plugs. The engine is designed to work without a magnet to pick up magnetics so if it didn't work without one that would be pretty bad. That doesn't mean it isn't beneficial though. I will also say that despite the engine being largely aluminum, there are magnetic metals in the engine. Every time I changed the oil and found the magnet still attached to the plug, there was definitely magnetic sludge including some very small visible metal particles stuck to it. All this material was material that, had it not been collected for removal by the magnet, would have cycled through the oil pump before being hopefully caught in the filter. So, I believe it should be clear to anyone with some common sense that a magnetic oil drain plug is beneficial to some extent, or at least has to potential to be, however minimal that benefit may be. If it collects any particles before they flow through the oil pump, that is good in my opinion. This of course is no longer the case if the magnet becomes dislodged from the plug, thereby being redefined as a foreign object stuck in the engine in which case it's more disbeneficial than it has the potential to be beneficial. In conclusion, magnetic oil drain plugs or magnets in general are not at all necessary, though they have the potential to be at least somewhat beneficial, but they present more risk than they are worth if not well designed and manufactured. |

A Fumoto valve is far more practical than a magnet on a sump plug.

True but I switched from fumoto to the magnet when I was tracking, off track excursions increase risk of knocking off the fumoto valve. I run a valve on my daily now, not fumoto, but I am much less likely to go offroad and if I did I would probably be calling a tow truck anyway, which is not the case at the track.

I can't imagine a situation in which an off-track excursion would cause me to take out the valve and not otherwise significantly damage my oil pan such that it'd need replaced. I've been tracking with the valve without issue, have gone off track a few times. The valve does not extend below the factory skid plate.

Just did my first oil change on the BRZ and installed one of these LOL. Ran them on all my other cars and never had any issues.

And drain plugs that attract oil to the rod bearings and also hold rocker arms together! I'm really holding my breath for the +5hp drain plug though!

If you get the fumoto valve, get the short nipple or no nipple version. The one in the picture above is the long nipple, dont get it for reasons that clearly apparent in the picture (well.. too long). I've had offs on track, one of them at around 110mph, enough to rip bumper, splitter, tear off oil cooler from crash bar and bent rad support on the bottom. Skit plate needed hammer time to get back in shape, the valve did not sustain any damage. It had grass all around it, meaning it did contact the ground but was sturdy enough to claw thru it rather than bend or break.
